Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Other then netflix, streaming movies etc... what use will these VR headsets be ? Surely not for gaming, since mobile gaming is pretty primitive compared to PC or console gaming ?

Mobile will be primitive in comparison to PC or console VR. If you want the best VR experience it will be on PC. While the specs of the PS4 are weaker than a mid or high end range PC. The ability to optimise software on a standardised platform that is the console makes it more capable of running demanding software. Early showings of VR software on Playstations VR HMD is surpassing what people thought was possible on the PS4. Gear VR will be banking on "killer apps" yet to be seen/created that will make it a must purchase, and for 99 extra on top of a 700-800euro smartphone it could be an easy decision. The netflix app itself is a great start. There'll be 360 videos and experience type apps. The games will be much inferior but maybe better than what you'd expect from typical mobile games. Processors are getting more powerful in newer phones and will continue to get better with each generation. They'll still look a long way from a premium VR experience.

That's the innovator edition, the consumer one won't be here id say till mid November and works with more than the s6, it's also half the price.

Ya doubt it'll be 99 euro here though.

You can order the innovator edition off Amazon.com though so hopefully we can order the consumer edition off there too.

If you have an s6 or 6 edge it's not really going to matter which you get, the new one has a change to the touchpad, is a little lighter and fits more phones but it's the same thing with the same resolution. I've got an rift 2 and have a innovation edition that I used for about 20 minutes just haven't put it on adverts yet. From using the oculus with motion the gear vr really sucked and when I get my hands on the htc vive the oculus will probably feel old then.
Your going to see the market awash with vr devices over the next 6mts, I think it's a case of wait and see before buying anything right now and try to get your hands on a pre order for the htc as there going to be like hens teeth this side of Christmas.
2016 is when the virtual word and physically finally meet, going to be one screwed up world then, people won't want to leave vr.

Hi, if anyone is interested in selling their GearVR then let me know. It has to be the note 4 version which has a model number that starts with R320. The R321 version will not work for me. Thanks

The new consumer edition Gear VR (£80) is available in UK now, I just ordered one from:
    http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/mobile-devices/wearables/gear/SM-R322NZWABTU

Note: need uk addresses but I signed up for DPD new Parcel Wizard service which has first 3 deliveries free til end month!

Seems like its being quietly released in European countries in stages cos I haven't seen any release dates mentioned in the media apart from "soon". Although it probably be available soon enough on the Irish site (and stores) I'm just too impatient!

Nice one. I'm getting butterflies thinking about the arrival and future of this great tech, PC and mobile. VR heaven isn't far off. Heaven being haptic feedback controllers to blow zombie brains asunder.

I'm the OP of this thread and I have had if for about 10 months now.

There is definitely a wow factor, but the cinema for example is not useable except as a demo. 99% of the games are second rate at best and no matter how immersive it is it's hard to get past the i have this big yolk strapped to my head feeling.

Lack of positional tracking is an issue too, but I would recommend the VR Porn :) but there is an issue with that too as the only player that plays the files is called MilkVR and is not available outside the states. You can VPN and install it that way though.

Showing out of stock now on the uk site :(

I look forward to seeing this medium mature in the coming years. The quality software will come in time. Mostly on the PC side of things. I can imagine that the games on mobile seem gimmicky and tacky. The ones on Google Cardboard certainly are. Hoping that Oculus and Vive VR and PS4 VR deliver big time on the promises, since 2012 in Oculus's case.

With cockpit type games like space, car and flight sims maybe you can imagine that you are wearing a helmet. I thought the ergonomics might not be too bad on the consumer headsets. Oculus used the word "disappears" for the sensation of wearing the consumer Rift, like wearing a baseball cap. It just slips on and off seemlessly. I'm actually feeling burnt out from waiting. The big VR players need to deliver a killer app and/or at least an awesome game if not two that are going to make you want to buy it as soon as you've tried it.

Yep, back in stock again for £80. Just ordered one now, paid via PayPal with Parcel Motel address attached. Hopefully it will ship fine. Can't wait.. some of the 360 degree videos coming out are fantastic, kids will love them on the VR headset.

Just ordered one from Samsung UK along with my new S6 Edge plus from Amazon france. Received shipping confirmation already to parcel motel so all good. Was concerned because last order i placed to Samsung UK was rejected as they say they won't deliver to mail forwarding services. Seems they are not bothered about sending the gear vr to Parcel Motel users. I expect Parcel Wizard users should be ok too for those who are near enough to a PM locker.

I ordered on Sunday and mine was dispatched Monday morning (To parcel motel). I used paypal though instead of Irish Credit card!

Samsung were great. Mine was shipped within an hour. It was a weekday though.

It took a bit longer for parcel motel than usual. But given the time of year that is expected. It spend an extra day or so in Belfast.

When you get your tracking number from Samsung go to the Parcel Motel website and put it in. It will increase your liability cover from €100 to €250 for free.

Samsung are selling the Gear VR in their stores in Ireland for, wait for it, 250 euro. Those sadists just can't stop. I'm totally incredulous. It's selling for 80 pounds on their UK website. Way to take the piss brah.

Is it possibly the Innovator Edition that they are selling? Consumer Edition is £80 but Innovator Edition is much more.

Got mine 2 days before Christmas, great piece of kit.

I'm not sure but that would be very sneaky if they were. There was no advertising stating it was a consumer or innovator edition. I just naturally assumed it was the consumer edition as the innovator edition was not intended for consumers ergo they wouldn't be selling innovator edition in shops. It wouldn't make sense to be selling a product that apps are no longer being developed for as the Note4 processors are less powerful than the newer phones.

The consumer edition works with the high end Samsung phones released in 2015, the innovator edition works with the note 4 only. Another difference between innovator and consumer edition is ergonomics. The consumer is lighter and more comfortable. Also the innovator edition overheats your phone after 20-30 mins of use.

Probably is the Consumer Edition then... which means they are absolutely taking the mick and ripping off!

Just going to bump this thread, a good lot of incoming users with the great S7 Gear VR giveaway, I have to say I am very impressed with it as a bit of kit, its a bit rough round the edges in some ways but it's very well conceived and easy to use.

This subreddit is a great information resource - https://www.reddit.com/r/GearVR/

You can download SBS 3D movies from your usual sources which are very good to view.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 771 ✭✭✭breeno

Where is the best place to pick one of these up or are they only available with the S7 at the moment? What kind of price will they be on their own? I'm not due an upgrade at present unfortunately.

    I bought mine from Amazon.

I'd key an eye on adverts, they are about €100 new off amazon delivered, so use that as a basis for negotiation. I would imagine with loads of them being given away free with the S7 a few we end up cheapish on adverts.

Got mine for 50 euro from vodafone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,762 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

Land's End is 33% off in the Oculus store at the moment. It is an excellent showcase of the VR's capabilities. It does not require a controller and is very well made, it's a bit easy and a bit short but it does a great job of showcasing the VR capabilities for showing other people. I played it all the way through and so did 2 of my kids.
Dead Gear is well recommended as well and I have Dl'd it but not tried it yet, apparently it is good for @6 hours of gameplay. Will provide more feedback on this later.

Where did you get it for €50??!

Why such a HUGE the difference in price?

    €199 in Vodafone

    http://shop.vodafone.ie/shop/accessories/samsung-vr-2-headset-black

    €250 in CW

    http://www.carphonewarehouse.ie/Shop/Tablets-Accessories/All-Accessories/Samsung-Gear-VR-IE

Innovator Edition in Amazon UK - Not sure what the dfference is - ?? - €147

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Gear-Innovator-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B016FK9OVY/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1458643477&sr=8-4&keywords=vr+samsung

I assume the Amazon one is the same as the Irish Market one?

I'm sure it's all set out somewhere if you Google it, eg this. The Consumer one does have a top strap, despite the picture.

I assume it's recommended to get for a first cheap VR experience?

Dunno. It just means I'm not tapping the side of my head for Shooting Showdown.
