    I don't think I like this.

Tiger coming back like this into a major.

Tiger's legacy is too important if it turns into this sort of will he won't he - like it is one week.

He shouldn't be playing if it couldn't be said by 1 month ago.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,634 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

I agree and if he was to play I wouldn't even be looking forward to it. I'd be more worried about it and him than anything.

I actually hope he won't play. How sad is that.

He knows if he were playing badly, rubbish even, he still would be the media hype focus and distract from the others and the tournament itself of he turns out. I couldnt see him teeing it up in that scenario.

So if playing, the press conference may have been seen as necessary if its the case that Tiger is playing exceptionally well and that advance notice should be given so that people know what to expect and it isnt just a case of being The Tiger Show on TV, but that the focus on him is fully justified. I think we can expect to see him on the first page of the leader board right to the end. Whether he can win is another question. But looking like a serious prospect now.

If he plays - a decent bet on him missing the cut may be worth it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,634 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

TRoL I wish I had your optimism. I used to. But no longer. I really just hope he's not actually broken at this stage.
I can't see him playing in this. Not after Dubai and all that.

Maybe he'll play in the Par 3.

Could understand that. Hopefully that's all though.

It's delusional to think someone can go from what we've seen this year to winning Augusta. He's a serious prospect to miss the cut and that's about it.

TROL L ikes to think he can and will.

If he wants to play he'll play, and good luck to him.

He might play well, he might be awful, who knows. We'll get nowhere in life by removing ourselves from situations with a negative attitude. He knows best if he's physically up to the test.

Fairly sure he will make an announcement about it today at some stage. As I said in another thread, if he decides to play, it will be for marketing/PR purposes.

And if that is the case - it is not just people being "negative" - it is people calling it as it is.

I know Tiger is not at the silly stage - but the likes of Ben Crenshaw going along and shooting a 91 (then +32 for 2 rounds) - makes a joke of our professional game. This is a major - not a pro am.

If Tiger is showing up for PR/Marketing - that deserves to be called out. Some top young player should be in there.

I doubt he'll play. He is just flogging a book but he is entitled to be there.

His inclusion in the field doesn't affect anyone else. Nick Faldo or Ian Woosnam could play if they wanted. Nobody gets bumped.

I couldnt agree on this point. The Masters is different. Different to every other golf tournament, and always has been. It is an invitational, and since the beginning had the for life entitlement to play in it, as a sort of reunion of old friends, and fun of playing golf rather then weekin week out hard nosed grind for cash. So sure, Crenshaw and the likes arent factors in competing for it, but do not harm, and if anything add some sense of history, tradition, playing golf for golfs sake, etc.
Heck, if I won one, I think I would keep turning up to play in it until the day I couldnt crawl out of my death bed to the first tee some April.

Honestly, anything could happen. He could actually announce his retirement there.

God no. Please. Lets not get down in the dumps like that.
I think it would be the end of golf as a spectator sport for me. I just dont know how it would be worth watching.
He just HAS to win one more major. It would be some consolation and redemption for the 8 fallow years. Even the finest Greek tragedies nor Wagner operas do not come close to the Tiger story of a God fallen.
A retirement today would rock the whole fundament of world sport. The Masters itself would have to be called off for this year. Annoyed you put such a black thought in my head now.

There is a yellow card attached to your post. What's that about? Surely it couldn't be that post itself, no?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,584 ✭✭✭ligerdub

There is absolutely no chance he's announcing his retirement the same week as the masters. None.

Somewhat relieved tbh. Only thing worse than a Masters without Tiger is a Masters with Tiger where on every move of his I'm practically waiting for the painful grimace to appear followed by the inevitable WD. At least I can lean back now and watch the Masters. Be well Tiger.

Think of the fire power he will turn up with at Erin hill now though with an extra few weeks rehab ? Its gona be a truly awesome summer folks.
We had the Tiger slam. What will we be calling his triple of US, Open, USPGA ?
    The Second Coming ?

Not a chance. He won't suddenly find form and compete with any of the top 10. Unfortunately he's gone; he may have one or two good tournaments but even that's a bit optimistic.

Still think this reeks of a an old fighter passed his prime who thinks he's got one more title shot in him. This has been a slow and in ways tragic end to a great career, he is now more newsworthy for his aborted comebacks and poor play than he is for his ability to compete with a new generation of golfing superstars. None of course are likely to dominate the way he did, but he just can't compete with them on the big stage. He is doing himself no good.

Unless EA Sports have something to do with it it'll be a triple of S,F and A.

Payne's Valley in honour of the late Payne Stewart is his latest course design. Might be a sign of things to come for his career, hopefully so.
Nicklaus and Norman have made a fortune on the back of course design, TGR Design will too.
And his legacy will be kept intact. No "Tiger Out" banners here 😂😂

Woods has had another back surgery. 6 months out. I think retirement looms more and more with each operation.

Hard to see him coming back from his one, ever.

Another update on the surgery. http://news.tigerwoods.com/tigers-blog-updates-on-tiger-jam-and-my-recovery/
..... It has been just over a month since I underwent fusion surgery on my back, and it is hard to express how much better I feel. It was instant nerve relief. I haven’t felt this good in years.

I could no longer live with the pain I had. We tried every possible non-surgical route and nothing worked. I had good days and bad days, but the pain was usually there, and I couldn’t do much. Even lying down hurt. I had nerve pain with anything I did and was at the end of my rope. The process leading up to my decision to have surgery was exhaustive. I consulted with a specialist, and after weighing my options, that’s when I decided to go to Texas to have surgery.

You mention the word ‘fusion,’ and it’s scary. Other guys who have had fusions or disc replacements like Davis Love III, Retief Goosen, Lee Trevino, Lanny Wadkins and Dudley Hart … they have all come back and played. But more than anything, it made their lives better. That’s the most important thing … that I can have a life again with my kids.

I did everything I could to play at Augusta and was ready to go. Unfortunately, it was kind of like the 2008 U.S. Open. The pain was post-impact when I swung the club. I figured, ‘Can I handle it?’ This time the answer was, ‘probably not.’ That shows the effect nerve pain can have.

Obviously, it was a huge disappointment not to play. I hate to miss any major, especially the Masters, but the reality is I just couldn’t play. Again, I want to congratulate Sergio on a great win.

I had a fantastic time at the Champions Dinner. There were so many great stories from the 1950s about Arnold. Some of them most of us already knew, but some of the younger guys didn’t. It was just a lot of fun. We all miss him.

As for returning to competitive golf, the long-term prognosis is positive. My surgeon and physiotherapist say the operation was successful. It’s just a matter of not screwing up and letting it fuse. I’m walking and doing my exercises, and taking my kids to and from school. All I can do is take it day by day. There’s no hurry.

But, I want to say unequivocally, I want to play professional golf again.

Presently, I’m not looking ahead. I can’t twist for another two and a half to three months. Right now, my sole focus is rehab and doing what the doctors tell me. I am concentrating on short-term goals.

I want to thank my doctors for their great work and support throughout this process. I also want to thank the fans for your phenomenal support. It means more than you know. There’s a long way to go, but as I said, words cannot convey how good it feels to be pain-free.

Next month, TGR Live will host the Quicken Loans National. It’s going to be a fun event for us because we’ve never been to TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. Billy Hurley will defend his title, and we’re waiting for a few more commitments. It should be another memorable tournament.

For a while now, I have been more involved with TGR growing domestically and working with future sponsors for our global expansion. It’s an exciting time and we will continue to push forward.........

....... That’s about it for now. Have a great summer
