Headphones that split the sound?

Anyone know if you can plug a pair of headphones into the TV without loosing
the main audio out when the 'jack' enters the socket, or do the main speakers remain active?
I only ask for my Dad as he's hard of hearing and am wondering about a separate audio stream that he could listen to and control the volume for his headphones. Perhaps there's a gizmo for doing this?

Hi. It might be a bit big size wise but check out the turtle beach px12 gaming headsets. You can pick them up for about 35 euros, and the can connect to the red and white 'audio out' jacks on the back of the telly. They come with a really long lead as well. You'll have to plug them in though, but a usb type phone charger will cover that.

Also in aldi or lidl, just before Christmas they had a device that looked sort of like a stethoscope that had a transmitter beside the tv. I don't know if it operates independent of the tv volume though.

Haven't got the TV yet but they have a Sky box. I wonder does the audio out of the box have the same audio stream?

I don't know about that specific box but I presume that audio-out via hdmi to the tv won't interfere with the optical audio-out.
