Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Am I being taken for a ride by delivery men?

I just took delivery of a large piece of solid wood furniture. I paid a hefty sum for it and 20 quid on top for local delivery (<5 miles). What this 20 quid bought me was to have 2 lads heft the piece into the front room and leave quickly. Still wrapped in cardboard, polystyrene lumps and with the wooden trestle attached to the bottom. It took me about an hour sawing and rocking to get the thing into where it needed to be. The 3 of us could have done it in a third of the time.

This is the third time I've taken delivery of something only to have it shoved 'close' to where I want it, but left packed up and my problem. Since the first 2 times were with a shop known for its corner cutting, I said nothing, just stopped shopping there, but now this.

Am I expecting too much of delivery men? Is that their sole purpose, to get the item in question in my front door, and frankly even getting it into the right room is above and beyond? Or are they taking the p*ss, knowing they can do a half assed job and break for lunch 20 minutes early?

They delivered it? What's the problem!

They are delivery men, not arrange your new furniture men

I think the clue is in the job title "Delivery Men". Not "Delivery, Installation Rubbish Removal Men"

They're paid to deliver, not to organise your house

They're delivery men, they deliver the product. Do you expect the milkman to put milk in your tea?

They're delivery men as their job title suggests. Not Interior decorators or feng shui experts.
They deliver it to your house, up to you where it goes afer that.

Wouldn't it have been a better idea to have asked the shop when you paid the extra €20 for delivery, instead of this lot here in After Hours?

They brought it to the room you wanted, job done. Did you offer a cup of tea? Perhaps a bit of cleavage (female preferably) and a saucy wink might get the job done. If you're a guy, man up and move it yourself! :D

No surprise here. These lads would have the bare faced cheek to refuse you asking them to help you unwrap. Common courtesy unfortunately is a very uncommon commodity in today's society. People in the main are far too lazy and deem they're weed smoking time far too precious.

Christ why didn't you ask them to buy the thing for you altogether, delivery men deliver simple as that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,622 ✭✭✭Ruu

Unless your purchase specified delivery and installation (or something to that effect), they did their job and you probably are expecting too much. Did you ask them if they could take away the packing or did they leave in too much of a hurry?

After reading the thread title I thought I was going to read the synopsis of a cheap porn movie currently in production.

OP, they're delivery men and they delivered. I'd examine my expectations if I were you, they did their job.

Any delivery guys I've dealt with have asked where I wanted the piece placed at least and have been quite helpful.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,647 ✭✭✭lazybones32

OP: it's usually the woman-of-the-house's decision on where to put the piece of furniture and the man's job to move it as many times as necessary until she is 'happy'*.

NB: if that incident upset you, don't shop at IKEA...they expect you to do everything!

I thought this was going to be about a great service where they deliver your stuff from the shop and give you a lift home as well!

    :(

    You're being disgustingly sexist.

    It's delivery people..................not delivery men.

Dunno about your delivery man, but a vending machine repair man took me for a ride one day.

Said he'd been down that road more than twice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,862 ✭✭✭✭inforfun

    Depends a bit.

Would expect them to take the stuff, used to transport the whole thing in, with them if they are working for the shop you bought from.

If they are just transporters, hired to do deliveries for a shop, then they did what they had to do.

All Feng Shui is, is placing things dependant on the location of windows or doors in the room, instead of the usual making sure nothing is in the way of the telly.

I used to deliver furniture. Would always place where requested, even upstairs, once I didn't have to rearrange a room or move other furniture. Also unwrap and take all packaging away. It's not unusual.

Some lads I worked with would do their best to dump and run.

You could call the company to find out what they instruct their drivers to do.

Do they just dump their load and run though or do they stick around and help you to get it where you want it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

Firstly did you discuss with the shop as to what delivering the furniture actually entailed? Or did you assume they did everything you expected? If you assumed that's where you made your first mistake.

I certainly wouldn't expect delivery drivers to unpack furniture, position it for me and take the waste away unless I specifically requested it or it was offered as standard by the retailer I bought the furniture from.

I had a couch delivered to my house last October.

Two Latvian deliverymen stayed and helped me put it together for about 3 hours.

No, we weren't great at instructions, but credit to them for hanging about.

I made them coffee and a hot meal and gave them a potato each to take home.

    Good people still exist.

I had an arcade machine delivered last week and not only did the delivery guy help me unpack and lift it in, he had a chat for a while about videogames and asked could he take a photo of my cabs. :pac:

    What are you, Irish?! :p

Last time I had a couch delivered they lugged it up the stairs, removed all the packaging and wrapping and disposed of the rubbish all for only E30 which I thought was great.

No, no, no, what are you doing? This is After Hours, where only the most literal of experiences are allowed. Delivery men deliver and that's the final word on it. Also, milkmen don't sell eggs or cream and doctors never leave things unaltered.
