Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

iPhone GPS when travelling in USA

Going to the US next week & will be driving about 2000 miles (west coast). Was considering using the iPhone as a GPS in the car, but am unsure as to wether or not it uses data (which would make it a far more expensive exercise).

It will be continually used on driving days (6 out of 10).

Will you be using a navigation app with maps? If so, will the maps be download one tile at a time as you travel about or will you have all the map data downloaded before you go?

If the map data will be downloaded as part of the app then the only data you will be downloading will be minimal, it will be GPS assist data which permits your builtin GPS to get a faster 'fix' on the satellites. It's only a few hundred bytes at a time and will be downloaded the first time you activate GPS each day.

I was thinking of just using apple or google maps. I have garmin iOS also, but I'm not sure if that loads whole maps

It would be better if you download an offline maps app. It will use space on your iPhone memory but you won't need to use any cellular data, like this one

I don't know the USA version quality but I've used the France one, and it's pretty precise.

What's the Garmin app called? If you've purchased 'Garmin N. America' then the maps are included and you should use that in preference to Google or Apple maps which will download data as you go.

Did you purchase this app? ....

I haven't used it for the US myself, but used the UK & Ireland one a few years back and it was fairly decent.

NavFree for US is a free offline GPS solution (doesn't need data like Google / Apple Maps) https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/navfree-gps-usa-+-street-view/id405922167?mt=8

Maps are available offline. From the description the maps are from 2014, but should (hopefully) not get you lost.
