Im after running into a small problem. recently i re installed a clean copy of windows 7 i had my key but in the last day im after getting the windows is not genuine notification stating that it could not be activated this is after about a month of having the system refreshed. and the computer for over a year or more. apparently somewhere i read my bios is configured incorrectly or not updated.

tbh this is just a pain and im wondering should i upgrade to windows 10 now or wait till its fully released. I have it running in preview on my laptop and im quite happy with the system fast start up times. would i run into issues for the free update(when released) because the system is not genuine.

Windows 10 Preview will expire at some point. Although when it's released, you can upgrade to Win 10 for free from Win 7. You will need your key though.

Is it a valid copy/licence key you're running on your machine?

Try running Magic Jelly Bean key extractor to see if you can get your Windows Key.

Also, have you tried running "sfc /scannow" ? It should fix any corrupt files.

Ya I ran MJB before reinstalling to get the key. It is valid copy had it on for 2years no issues. No I haven't tried scannow

In the past you weren't able to go from preview to full new windows version.

If there is a show stopper they may do that again. So if using a windows preview/beta plan for doing a complete install from scratch which means installing all programs and settings again.

TBH you are probably better doing a clean install of 10 when it comes out. When you inherit settings you may also inherit problems.

While I don't disagree in principle, Win 7 is the first Win system I've found where a good audit of programs and documents is almost as good as a reinstall from scratch. I've run Win 7 systems for 3-4 years without feeling the need to do a clean install. Never had that with XP - 2 years was about the limit there before it would start getting bogged down.

That said, the settings transfer wizard with Win 7 is head shoulders above anything that came before and you can be pretty sure it will collect all of your files and restore them to your fresh install.

I've never had any luck with the Vista version of settings transfer.

I just love the way in the Linux world you can export a text file with a list of installed programs and features and have them downloaded and installed when you do a new install.

But yeah 7 has a much longer half life than any of the earlier versions.

It probably could not automatically be activated because the same key was used to activate it before. Did you try running the phone activation? Ring 01 447 5390 and follow the instructions - I bet that will do the trick :)

Was unable to find that number. Thanks

That failed to work unfortunately. It required Instillation ID which i managed to pull from from a microsoft application but she then said it was unable to be activated

That usually means the key is invalid or it has already been used more than a few times to activate windows. You can talk to an operator and if you are sure your key is legit, they will activate it for you.
