It is actually the perfect time to start slapping your kids, when they are Young-they are smaller than you and relatively weak-you dont want to start hitting them when they are 25 and you are in your 50's-your odds decrease with age, so pimp-slap a toddler, while you still can.

Exactly. And you have to stop as they grow into teenagers. They're cute enough at that age to find the worst nursing home to plant you in while they spend your cash.
In the good old days, you could beat the sh!t out of them then send them up a chimney or sell them into slavery for beer money.

I saw this thread title and my very first thought was well he's not exactly the best one to be giving advice on child care, and then I thought wow... how times have changed....

The only thing that has changed is that people have forgotten already what that man represents, and have been duped into thinking he's some kind of "good guy", while his recent comments have proved that he's not even that.

Childless, celibate man, Pope Francis has said that hitting kids is fine, just not in the face.

What qualifies this guy to offer such awful parenting advice to people?

*slaps him, but doesn't maintain his dignity*

This disappointing from this pope. He had been showing signs that he could modernise thinking in the church.

I'm presuming this is what he said and not some sensationalist media interpretation.

There is if course that if you speak to most people from his generation and they would probably support giving a child a slap. I'm not saying it's ok, just that's how it was.

I was talking just yesterday with a COI friend and he was baffled how priests could think they were positioned to give family advice. I agreed completly.

IL Papa ...He's all our daddy, maybe he''ll come around yours and give you a slap too OP!

Head of institutionalised child abuse organisation says it's ok to hit kids.

    This is news?

He should know because he has a wife and kids......

    Oh. Wait.

Guess he needs to keep them from squeeling on the paedos somehow.

Who listens to the Pope anymore? The Catholic Church's coffin in Ireland has been under construction for many years now. The marriage equality referendum should piss them off nicely.

    Case of lost in translation.

He said it's ok to hit 'on' kids...

Pope showing his affiliation to La Cosa Nostra, "Not in the face". :D

I don't hit my own kids, but in saying that, I'm of the 'wooden spoon' at home, and the 'friendly slap' in school area.

Did me no harm, but thankfully society has moved on a bit since then.

Never! Hurting your child is acceptable? How can someone who has never had a child (and never will) give such an advice? Because he was hit when he was young and thinks that's okay?

I'm glad I got a few slaps of the auld wooden shpoon when I was a kid, I was a right little kunt at times

Did you no harm... unfortunately not the same as 'doesn't do harm'

Should it be bare hand or wooden spoon for optimum results?

No. You're cherry picking what you think I meant, for reasons beyond my understanding. If you cannot see how the head of the largest religion in the world saying "You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others", a week after 12 journalists were murdered for publishing satirical depictions of the prophet Muhammad, is despicable behaviour,
I just don't see how it's despicable. I think he makes a valid point, you were saying you hate the religion and not the religious person, you have said you can get on with a relation who's a nun so why demonise this old man for making a valid point? Is it the specific words he used? Surely you can give the guy a break on wording?

I still think you're hatred clouds your ability to think rationally about religion. Hate is a powerful emotion, to be truly free of religion you have to be indifferent to it. It's just a part of human behaviour getting upset about it is about as useful as getting upset about it raining. As long as people hold extreme emotions in regards to religion, either love or hate they'll have reasons to use religion for conflict. You've turned the pope into a version of hitler just because he gave his opinion. It's extreme.

Indeed, the only people paying an obsessive degree attention to every word uttered by the Pope these days seems to be the creepy end of militant athiesim, the rest of us shrug and get on with our lives.

If we're going to be genuinely strict about childless - possibly virginal - people pontificating at length about parenting, would that not invalidate about 80% of the discussion about same in AH?
