Really ??? I did'nt know it was changing this year, I was goping to commit to a new Octavia in May but may hold back if there is a new model due....

I think the OP meant that he was changing to the new Octavia from a 2012 model. The current Octavia is only around less than 2 years, very unlikely Skoda will change it so soon.

Aaahhaaa. that makes sense now, thanks, but let me muddy the waters with the following link.. http://www.autoevolution.com/news/spyshots-2015-skoda-octavia-facelift-spotted-photo-gallery-81905.html

The i40 was on my shortlist until I took a number of test drives. I found it to be cramped but then I was used to a Skoda Superb which will probably be my car of choice for 2016 especially as the rear on the new 2015 model is no longer pig ugly.

The OP found the car annoyed them - and felt the need to have a rant about it - that's how I read it

Would have to disagree, it seemed to me like a negative review, and a justified one too given the details.

Comparing interior space in an i40 to a Superb is hardly comparing like with like...

Family member and a friend own an i40, and have had a number of drives as toying with the idea of a new car.

Can't say I had anything negative to say about it. Granted I havn't had a wide ray of experience with brands/manafacturers, think the OP should be taken as a rant as outlined.

And it wouldn't the the first person to get a lemon rental in fairness.

The i40 seems to get overwhelmingly positive reviews for a car in that bracket.

I drove an i40 rental for a few weeks, and wasn't impressed with it at all,

Clutch took quite a bit of getting used to, as in, lift your foot .001mm and if you weren't hard on the accelerator, you would cut the engine out..
    interior layout/dash was pretty bad.

overall it felt like a poor(er) mans Avensis.

only bright note was the 2 inch screen in the rear view mirror which acted as a reversing camera screen.

I certainly won't be rushing to buy one anytime soon.

Same width, same height, i40: 2.5 inches shorter, similar price. Cant see why they should not be compared.

    I stand corrected.

Superb Saloon seems much much bigger compared to the i40 but I double checked and there's not much in the difference at all.

    Thanks

Ive had an octavia combi ambition since 2012. Ive clocked 178000 on it without missing a heartbeat. Plenty of tyres and regular servicing though.
Will be replaced in June by new model but I hear its got a smaller tank so obviously expecting my range to shrink.the new manufacturers have deffo made others have to up their game but its resale value of these in the future id be interested in.

Don't forget the "new" 90 bhp weedy engine as if the 105 bhp engine wasn't slow enough!!

It depends what you want from a car, but that's really not enough for a car of that size and weight. Load it up with a few people and luggage and you'd know all about it.

I found the 105 bhp in the 2012 model very sluggish. Give the 90 bhp a spin and see what you think. Let us know here then.

I drive an 2011 passat tdi but had an i40 out for 2 weeks but was not impressed, i found it inferior quality both inside and out - very poorly screwed together and the 1.7 diesel engine more harder on fuel but it looks good but would not buy one.
    What others think of them.

Bit unfair to compare it to a Passat no?

Hardly, they're in the same segment

Not unfair to compare them, but common sense should let you know when the i40 starts at nearly 5k less than the a comparable passat that the soft touch plastics and sound deadening might not be quite as good.

Not comparable to a Passat yet they're the Garda fleet cars

I am the op. I owned 6 skoda superbs in six years, the latest being the 1.6 2014 facelift model that I had to get repaired hence the time spent with the i40. I have traded the superb in for a 2015 facelift BMW 520d, 8 speed auto 190bhp, ill not lie, it's a better car than the superb but I honestly still believe the superb is the best car in its class, and I miss not felling my rear passangers knees in the back of my seat! Anyone thinking of buying a superb stop wasting time and do it! Thinking of an i40? Test drive it!

I can only imagine what a 1.6 in a Barge like that must be like Gallag

Acceptable, the six speed box made more of a difference in the facelift. I mean it's not going to win any races but it will pull a full load up motorway hill section at a speed you could lose your license so if high octane driving is not your bag the 1.6 is acceptable.

Not many Garda driving Passats or any other VWs over the years. Garda fleet is normally with whoever wins the contract.

Yes the 520D is a better car but I could not justify the price difference. The superb is without doubt the best car in its class/price bracket once you get over the sea donkey like rear end. New model which is being launched this summer is my 2016 car.

I drove my sisters i40 to Sligo and back. Nice car to drive but I found the driving position poor and very little support in the seats. I was like and old man after the drive.

Haha Brian, nice car to drive except for the slight crippling ;-)

Just as an observation, it is astounding just how small the 5 series feels after 6 years of superb ownership!

Driving position seems poor alright from having sat in one last summer.

From memory - its an epically bizarre mix of a sports car driving position and a normal cars - without any of the benefits of EITHER.

Very hard to get comfy in.

No it doesn't. It looks like some boy racer drove their recently deceased grandads car through halfords.

How could it when the 5 series is a bigger and wider car?

    It has less interior space.......

Only from the back of the front seat to the knees of the rear passenger, and not by that much. But from a drivers point of view, width is what gives a car the big car feeling, and the 5 is a good bit wider. Looks and feels it too.
I think it's the obsession on boards for Skoda's being massive. Back in the day I test drove a VRs thinking it'd be a decent space match for my car at the time, a Mazda 6, seeing as the 6 wasn't the biggest in it's class, and everyone couldn't stop talking about how massive the Octavia was. I found it felt a little small, you knew it was a class down from the drivers seat. And it's the same with the 5-series vs Superb.

What would the guy that actually had a superb and now has a 5 series know about it anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,480 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

My old Passat CC definitely had a bit more legroom especially in the back compared to my current F10. The F10's long bonnet and longitude fitted engine eats into a fair bit of cabin space.

I know which I'd prefer and space has nothing to do with it. I just don't get the obsession with Skodas. I would have thought the Skoda had more useable space over the 5 due mainly to the transmission tunnel however.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,355 ✭✭✭gallag

The rear legroom in the skoda is massively more than the 5. It's not even close.

Sure what's actual measurements when we have opinions?

But rear legroom is only one dimension, and not noticed from the driver seat.

Nothing whatsoever to do with the i40. .....

Of course it makes a difference from the drivers seat, quite often I have to move my seat forward in the 5 to accommodate the rear passanger, i never once had to do that in the superb!
