i've just been offered a teaching post Near Ealing in Middlesex.
Love the school and the staff and students seem great. Only problems are:

    A) the taxes and
    B) the rental costs

If anyone could answer the following I would be extremely grateful, as I have a max of two weeks to give them an answer about the job.

    1. Do the UK operate a similar system of tax credits to Ireland, or do you pay them all of the 20% in tax, on top of NI and pension contributions?

    2. Is there any area in or around Ealing where it's possible to let an apartment for a couple for less than £1k? Have looked at a few areas and EVERYTHING seems extortionately priced for what it is.

    Thanks

    1. Use www.moneysavingexpert.com/tax-calculator/ to find out exactly what you get after tax and NI.

    2. Ealing can be expensive as its on a main train line into London. You will find it hard to get a decent 1 bed apartment for under 1k anywhere. You might get better value in other parts of London but then your commute costs go up.

Check out areas along the tube and national rail lines that pass through Ealing - by going out a short distance you may be able to save some money. Use the map search on Zoopla or Rightmove.

I agree with rainbow above. There would be accommodation a bit cheaper out the line. Having said that of course you will have additional travel costs if socialising etc in Central London. But at least it will get you settled and you will have time to look for something better before the renewal of the lease
