Have you actually watched him play a full game? The amount of times he launches a quick counter attack is wonderful for a centerhalf. I think the problem is the opposite, he's always trying to make the attacking pass.

His passing stats are usually very good. Just seems to give it away every now and then because he tries to pass it rather than lump it down the field.
