I am on windows 8.1. I have a Recovery partition on my c drive that is 25GB.

I could kinda do with that space. Do I actually need that Recovery? What is it used for? There seems to be nothing really in it. The only thing really on it is

    $shtdwn$.req
    mrtstub.exe
    mrt.exe._p

It totally depends on which version of windows / which PC / Laptop you have.
eg: try getting your hands on a Vista OEM CD at this stage.

Rather than paint yourself into a corner use something like treesize / sequoia viewer / spacemonger to see what's really taking up space

ccleaner is good at tidying up

uninstall apps you don't use , largest first

you can also compress files , but not multimedia ones like mp3's or videos

Disable hibernation if you don't use it
    Adjust size of recycle bin
Remove all but most recent restore points with Ccleaner
Remove all apps you don't need
Move some big media files to external storage

Thanks lads. I'm happy enough with how tidy my laptop is. It's only s 250GB. I have a a lot of pics and videos on it which I back up to external storage. Just the recovery thing In the same disc seems pretty useless. What exactly is it for?

It's to get you back to factory install if windows keels over so badly you can't fix it.

If you have or can get the exact version of windows that was installed you may not need the partition.

it's like a lightening protector on your tv aerial, you might never need it , but if you need it nothing else will do

But if you have windows Vista you may have to get a recovery image for that that particular model of computer - ask on the laptops forum

Windows 8.1 it is. I went ahead and deleted it and extended my primary partition. It has been teasing me to long. (o:
