How to copy video from dvr to laptop

    I have a UPC mediabox + hd dvr (the model is Cisco 8685DVB).
    I have a laptop.
    I'm wondering what would be the best way to copy recorded footage from my dvr onto my laptop?
    My understanding of the process is that it would require 1. a connection cable and 2. software on my laptop.
    Has anyone any advice or experience in this area?
