Bit of advice - try get a car 2008 or above. Cheaper road tax which will work out in the long term!

On the other hand, having, momentarily, the attention of a person who wishes to purchase a fast car for the purpose of commuting on back roads is, in my view, an ideal opportunity to discuss the wisdom and maturity of such a proposed course of action.

Boards has cycle/fitness forums. This is motors.
I'm sure your intentions are good, but as stated, this isn't the place.

The only cheap 2008 onwards cars are those that have high motor tax. Anything with low motor tax tends to cost a substantially more to buy. In alot of cases the difference buys you alot of motor tax. An example of this is a 2007 535d v a 2008 535d, there can be up to €10k difference in purchase prices.

Correct but most cars 2008 and above have cheap motor tax compared to their 2007 model.
One car, as far as I can remember, which had a higher tax rate in 2008 compared to 2007 was the Honda Civic saloon. (Not 100% sure on this but Im neary certain)

The OP ain't looking at cars like Honda Civics though.

A 2007 BMW 530d/535d costs €1800 to tax, a 2008 costs €750 but costs up to €10k more to buy. So it would take you years to make that money back in cheaper motor tax savings.

My reference to a bike was but a bit of sideline banter. My concern is in the area of motors. The cars being mooted are high-powered long-distance models and entirely inappropriate for backroad commuting. This sort of a mis-fit can have grave consequences. The old dictum of "horses for courses" still holds true. Cars are not toys. I remain of the view that this is exactly the place for discussing the matter.

mate I think you should move on now. We got what you mean now so plz nicely move on. I can use all type of roads coz I'm paying taxes for it so when it feels like I'll use motorway and when it worth taking will go on back roads. The other day I was on m50 heading to Sandyford. It was absolute joke. Didn't get a chance to go over 80 km. 40 - 60km Max. know tell me wtf I wudnt take back road? Never mind. Good luck Sir

What on earth are you ranting about ?
The guy is looking for help in buying a "fast and reliable car", not looking to be lectured on the ills of high speed motoring.

    Thinking of Mondeo ST 2.2.

I like big saloon cars. And of course a bit of power. That's way I'm mostly sticking to big cars. Was almost definite that I'll buy accord. But one guy here said they aren't that fast as I imagine. Feck sake dono what to pick. Think I want to much. All in one. :):D

Thanks for being gracious enough to acknowledge that at least I had a point.
In the absence of any support for my quest to discuss the wisdom of the proposed car purchase, I will, as you suggest, move on.

    Safe driving midaev1.

Only when taxed as a commercial vehicle.

Ya, and they generally don't have back seats...and also need to be able to provide proof that it'll be used for a registered business before taxing as a commercial, although not 100% sure on that last point but would be amazed if they didn't ask for a VAT no. and stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭midaev1

Yeah. That's what I mean. Usually commercial cars have no back seat however you can have them and still be on cheap tax. Called crew cab. Of course it will cost u money to convert but for long run its worth I think

A family member had one just like this. Smashing jeep, very fast and very steady to drive. His wasnt taxed as a commercial so tax was up past €1,000.

Also, commercials dont have NCT. They have a DOE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 565 ✭✭✭bodonnell

Ok not particularly stylish depending on your pov but fast & reliable were your original requirements. Check out pistonheads.co.uk for sti version of the forester

As far as I know, Honda's dont have timing belts - they have chains so they do not need to be replaced.
So thats a plus side to it (y)

You can pick up that shape accord for under €2000. No way I'd pay €400 a month for one.

My old Accord type S is still for sale its immaculate and full main dealer history and I had it detailed and polished it regularly myself too!

fast and reliable is the requirement and you are asking for opinions on new cars... newsflash, the newer cars are, the heavier and bulkier they get hence slower (most of the models), the newer the more sensors and electronics, hence less reliable and more expensive to maintain... whoever told you about 525 bmw being ****e is wrong and right at the same time, if you don't maintain them they will **** themselves, but if you want a fast car you must look after it, it is all up to you what exactly you want from a car
