Looks like I'll be carrying the rain from Boston into Cork :o
Hope everybody is all set - massage booked for lunch tomorrow to make me brand new.

I'm doing the half on Monday hoping for around 2 10. My last race in Cork city was 31 years ago. I remember it well National Marathon 1984. I was going a bit better that time

Don't be so coy Fieldsman. What did you do it in back then?

Weather looks cool with light showers which is perfect, but wind could be a problem.

I ran too much last week :( (don't ask) so very short taper for me.

@Echancrure - with the goal you gave I'm sure I'll be running (well, hopefully) very close to you on Monday..I'll be wearing a St. Finbarr's singlet trying to keep up with the pacer, a fellow Barrs man, Paul Gallagher :)

About 1100 finishers last year, 1200 the year before, so it looks like it will be about the same.

While out for a jog last night I notice they have tarmac'd the part of the marina which was very poor before. Around mile 2 for the half and mile 15.5 for the full.

Noticed the other evening that the entrance to the Atlantic Pond from Monaghan Road, there are a few 'potholes' right by the gravel cark park (where the height restriction barrier is). Just be a little careful here as it could be a tripping hazard when running in a crowd for the Half runners.

Rain might not be too bad for the morning but heavier rain is pushing in around lunch time, if that front pushes in quicker it could be wet enough for the whole thing. Looks like strong enough S/SE winds, so the marathon group will be running head on to that in the mahon loop of the course which is fairly exposed.

    Should be fun :pac:

With any luck it will push through before the start, even from the point of view of spectators which in turn give us strugglers a boost ☔️☔️☔️

After about 5 websites I finally found the forecast I wanted. A light breeze in the morning which gets stronger in the afternoon. Sounds good to me. Surely this is right and all the others are wrong. ;)

Yep, that's the only one predicting light wind.

at the end of the day we can't do much about the weather but the weather can most definately curtail expextations. i will still probably go for my target, but if its a windy day it will be very difficult.

i don't mind rain once its not at thestart and its starts off dry..but if its windy..then i might be hidding in the middle of a group somewhere hoping for protection!!!

Race smart, have had to do it many times, that is go with a group that may be going a fraction too slow in the exposed or headon sections and then push on again once the wind is to the side or behind. Or even if its just two people say 50meters up the road and your going solo, it may be worth the effort to reel them in and then draft off them, recover, and then if needed push on to next target.

Most of all, enjoy it :D

Weather forecast, from 7am to 4pm. This should be updated tomorrow mid-day/early afternoon.

Outlook has improved steadily over teh past few days - it was absolutely awful  but has steadily improved. Forecast wind level has dropped and heaviest rain isn't now predicted to come until after 2pm. Should start out dry.

...Update tomorrow....fingers crossed, that conditions continue to improve.

I'm not Forest's mate but I do have a view on it anyway. Cork is one of the very few marathons where I managed a negative split when I was racing it; just by a few seconds, so pretty much even splits, really.

The worst of the climbs is in the first half (the drag out of the tunnel) and the climbs in the second half are not bad by any stretch of the imagination. I highly recommend even splits, which is also the way the pacers are going to run it.

I haven't been talking to Paul yet but if the strong winds do materialise then I don't need a pacer to tell me it might be a tall order. For me the margins are so tight for a sub-3 that any head wind for a few miles will kill any chance of achieving it.

I will make a decision on what to do at around 8:45am Monday morning:confused:

If it's really windy I'm tempted to just run it as a training run and then enter the Waterford Marathon which is in 3 weeks time...me head is wrecked!

Same here. But I'll still go for a pb (at 3:09:30 I have a larger margin for improvement than you) if the wind is too much (I'll decide at half way!).

Anyway always looks worse on the forecast than when you are actually running it.

    Good luck everyone, enjoy.

Obviously a quiet day is preferable for a marathon but the wind coming from westerly direction isn't all that bad in Cork. You're sheltered for a good few miles on that stretch along the old railway line and, crucially, you'll have it on your back for the last 4 miles - as long as you're still in with a chance at that point.

Miles 18-22 will be the tough ones, with a combination of headwind and rolling hills. They will make or break your PB.

    Hey all,

Does anyone who picked up their number today know if you can just show the email on a phone? Must it be printed?

On Saturday some images on phones were scanning without a problem. If not, it was easy to get a replacement ticket from the help desk.

Updated 8am today. Final update this evening

Summary: It will start out dry tomorrow, with light rain/drizzle setting in around 10am, getting slightly heavier by 1pm, but getting heavy by 4pm. There will be strong winds throughout, however temperatures should stay around 10-12C
