Why do they change their names at all?

Most of them are legacies from the pirate era.

Larry is a legitimate contraction of Lorcan. Good information though.

Scott Williams = Gerry Reynolds (He is a brother of "The Reynolds Sisters" who had a hit with "I'd rather Jack" in the late 80s)

A fella from the Pirate era told me the reason for the, ahem, showbiz names is because many of them were signing on as well.

Ruth Scott/Mary McDonagh - is that one really true?

Lots of presenters around the world use "stage names". There's nothing new there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,210 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

They think they are stars you see, hence a lot of 'stage' names.

Think originally many were on pirates and worried about prosecution

There was a notion that if a summons turned up for the stage name you were away scott free - as if the authorities didn't a: know who they actually were and b: can't get summons reissued.

Doubt there's many under the age of 30 with fully fake names, surname changes / using mothers maiden name etc is a little more common.

I never had a problem with fake names. I do have a problem with fake accents. Way too many of them on the radio.

I refuse to believe that Dusty Rhodes isn't his real name.

I think a list of people on the radio who use their real names but really shouldn't because they sound silly is a good idea.

Ryan Tubridy, for example, would never have been allowed on Atlantic 252.

John Blake on pirate radio in Cork long time ago - now better known as his real name, John Creedon.

Also: Dickie Bow, Wayne Scales, Nails Mahoney, Cliff Walker, Jo King, Batman Gomez, Hollywood Haze, Cousin Brucie and not forgetting Rick O'Shea. It should be pointed out that over the years it also had relatively normal deejay-sounding names too!

Q102's Gerry Stevens is a brother of former radio presenter Barry Lang. I would hazard a guess that his real name is Gerry Lang!

I am assured that my old radio friends, Ulick McGee and Nick McGuinness are indeed their real names. They may have been one and the same person though.....
