Just had bacon and fried eggs with toast and tea.

    Bastards.

Hate eggs, beans or mushrooms on them. Just puddings, sausage and rasher on butter for me.

The more packed the better and either mustard or nothing. Ketchup shouldn't be let near a breakfast roll.

Agreed, although I hate being looked at like I have 3 heads in the shop whenever I ask for a bit of mustard in it - you'd swear I asked if they had any grey poupon!

Brown sauce is also acceptable in small doses - too many places lorry it on and it ruins it because all you can taste is the brown sauce. Waste of a good roll if you ask me!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭Rosie Rant

Forget breakfast rolls. Give me a crispy roll with butter, mayonnaise
( sometimes taco sauce instead of mayonnaise), mushrooms, cheese and a hot chicken fillet any day. If I could get away with having one of these every day, I would have two! But I haven't had one in so long.

I do like breakfast rolls, but I prefer to make them myself. The rashers are usually too salty in a deli and the sausages too spicy. Superquinn sausages on a roll would be lovely. And you can't beat a buttery white pudding sandwich.

Breakfast roll guy's just aren't the same anymore. 3 young bucks in front of me, dressed head to toe in Snickers gear ordering rolls but insisting on the fat being cut off the rashers.
    Bloody wimps.

I've feckin seen that in quite a few shops - why bother getting a breakfast roll if you're going to be all health conscious about it? Just get something else or fcuk off

Occasionally I'll grab one from declans on Bolton St though, magic.

Declans is probably the best of the bunch in Dublin - can't eat them too often, it's heart attack town stuff but by christ they're tasty!

If any of you are working around grafton St, Boland's near the grafton lounge do lovely old school breakfast rolls. I haven't had one in ages as I wouldn't normally eat that heavy in work.

Lad I know, was a year or two ahead of me in school. He's about 36 now and he's huge. He's known as Breakfast roll man. A terrible diet, 20 fags a day, breakfast roll and takeaways every day. Lives on his own, never had a woman, drives a digger, wears his rigger boots to the pub and sits at at bar supping Guinness all night, with the big belly hanging out over the jeans. I'd that Pat Shortt song is his favourite song ever, because he is that song.
Let's just say, I won't be at all surprised if hear he has had a heart attack or a stroke.

Sometimes if you take a bite the fat on the rasher doesn't break and it pulls the entire rasher out. Not necessarily a health decision, could just be convenience

Breakfast rolls are the devil of hangover foods. The first bite when your body just wants grease and stodge- best thing ever. But that feeling that hits you about half way through....no buddy...not worth it.

Never got into the breakfast roll craze.

Much prefer some juicy lightly fried rashers and runny fried egg on buttered toast, with a little brown sauce. Or substitute the rashers for sausages, if their dacent ones (hard to get decant sausages in places that sell breakfast rolls tbf).

Radisson Blu in D8 do a buffet fry up fit only for the breakfast aficionado. The quality of the produce the use is exceptional. Rashers are sublime and the sausages so gorgeous you could happily eat a plate full of them and be hungry for little else.

Their bacon is also beautiful. None of your over cooked, dried out Kylemore crap here. Same with their black and white puddings. Their so nice and tasty, would love to know who supplies them. So succulent. Fried eggs glistening in butter with yellow gooey sunshine slowly using from within.

I'll usually go though five or six slices of toast with the above, maybe a half pound of butter but last week their warm all butter croissants just looked so inviting and so for the first time I abandoned my love of Johnston Mooney and O'Brien's finest and went continental and boy was it worth it. Had many a breakfast since, and toasted bacon sambo also but I can't help feeling dissatisfied as now that I've had one, nothing compares to a few rasher stuffed Radisson Blu breakfast croissants.

Used to love them and was getting too fond of them last year.

Have pretty much cut them out after Christmas after I started to feel bloaty for a few weeks even if I wasn't eating much of anything else.

Replaced it with a pint glass of low fat milk and 3 wheatabix in it, keeps me right for the day :)

Vile things. A cheap and stodgy roll filled with even cheaper ingredients. Withered looking sausages that have been under lights since they were heated up in an oven 5 hours earlier. Pudding without any of the flavour that makes good black pudding such a beautiful occasional treat. Then drown it in sugary sauce and eat while walking. Yuck.

You are so far up your own arse you could crawl out your mouth and turn yourself inside out handily enough. The stench of superiority complex wafting off your almost every post is unbearable.

Not mad keen on them, they're way too big and way too greasy.

I've always been a fan of rasher sandwiches/baps. A much more manageable, less gluttonous, less greasy option. Homemade or in a cafe, rashers from delis tend not to have crispy fat. Sometimes I'll fry and egg and add that too.

Hang on, is that not what a bowl is for?

Unless they're home-made I'm not that keen really. I'd rather get a sausage sambo from a deli, on white bread with butter and tomato relish. 'Cause I'm fancy like that! :pac:

I know it sounds odd, when I was a kid I had it in a bowl all the time.
My uncle does it with a pint glass all the time when he would be in a hurry for work, just stir the hell out of it in a pint glass and neck it off, saves me having to sit down and eat it, can consume it quick and wash up quicker then get on with the day.

I do it with cold milk and it saves the mess of saucepans and all that shyte!

I'm a big man - 6'2 - and if you get an Irish mammy working in a shop to make you a breakfast roll, it could keep you going til dinner time. There's a lovely old dear in my local shop who's either trying to kill me or thinks I need extra feeding but she packs in the fillings the very rare time I get one.

She packs in the extra rasher and the extra sausage and the extra hash brown. I'd say the full daily calorie intake there in one go. She smiles sweetly as she sends me one big, greasy breakfast closer to a heart attack.

It is 8hrs since I posted this morning. So far today I've ignored the yearning, the craving. I've had a lovely bowl of porridge, an apple, a fist of grapes, homemade soup for lunch and a banana.

But no more! Dinner for the family has been purchased. Mine will consist of 2 thick-cut slices of freshly baked bread, courtesy of my wife. Each slice shall be lathered in copious quantities of Bandon butter. A layered bed shall be place on 1 slice of bread consisting of 2 large butcher sausages sliced in half, 2 large thick-cut rashers, 2 slices of Clonakilty white and 2 slices of Clonakilty black and a final topping of a fried egg. The second slice of bread shall be placed on top and said feast shall be devoured. Watched down with a mug of tae and 2 gaviscon tablets.

    Goodnight.

Might be more because the fat on deli rashers tends to be pale, flabby and chewy rather than for health concerns.

Has to be a soft roll. Crispy rolls just ruin it.

Soft rolls hold a hell of a lot more fillings too,I'm on the fence.I love them both equally

But that's not a breakfast roll, its a rasher sambo,no matter how you dicky it up.I do like the idea of a beer with a fry though, reminds me of great drinking holidays with the lads along the Spanish Costas during my teens. In most places a pint of beer is/was included in the price of the breakfast

    I just had;

    2 jumbo saussies
    2 rashers
    3 pieces of white pudding
    1 egg

on a CRUSTY roll, with brown sauce.

I also had 2 cups of tea. And a bar of chocolate. Cos I decided earlier that today has no calories.

Butter only belongs on toast and spuds - in molten form.

Also this ketchup problem we have. There really is only one way to fix it.

Anyone who takes ketchup should be allowed to enjoy their breakfast roll in comfort and finish it in peace with their tea or coffee. Then they should be taken out the back and shot. It's for their own benefit and the good of humanity.

Brown sauce is the condiment of choice for a breakfast roll, or mustard on occasion. But only if it's Colman's.

My breakfast/lunch today was 3 sausages, 3 rashers (maple cure ;)), 4 black pudding, 4 white pudding, 2 fried eggs, a tomato (all grilled bar the eggs, much nicer) and 3 slices of toast with lasting of mustard and loads of tea :D. Will have the same tomorrow after a feed of porter tonight, in fact I have something similar every Saturday and Sunday (amounts vary). Wouldn't be the weekend without a good cooked breakfast, we have had them at home more or less every weekend since I could eat solid food!!

A good feed lol e the above will see you through to dinner no bother anyway so it might be big but skipping lunch means you are spreading it over two meals really.

Many moons ago when I was a college student used to work in a restuarant in town. The breakfasts were so popular, people love them.

We used to do a tea time grill for after 12.00pm- Sauages x 2 , rashers x 2, pudding x 2, pork chop x1 , egg x 2 kidney x 2 , beans and chips, then people would asked you for bread and butter and pot of tea , the plate was huge. This was about 20 years ago and was very popular. I think the kidneys and pork chop would just push me over the edge.

Love a breakfast roll every so often but I cannot abide black pudding. Maybe it's because I've never had a nice brand or something but it always tastes like burnt, charred blood to me. Also, beans have no place anywhere. Disgusting little things.

there is a place on Marys lane in Dublin city centre which used to do a fantastic breakfast, you wouldn't fit even half of it into a roll!

I think this is it but had a different name when I was last in it, that was very early one morning while getting some soakage in before heading to Slatterys for the "morning shift":pac:

Superiority complex? Excuse me for offering my opinion that the cheapest sausages, rashers, pudding and eggs delivered onsite and heated up in an oven before being stuffed into a sickly white Cuisine de France 'baguette' doesn't exactly represent haute cuisine. It's cheap and nasty processed food that uses massive amounts of salt to mask the quality of the ingredients. The whole Irish deli thing that you find in Centra, Spar, Mace and Topaz is an example of the very worst type of convenience food. I've nothing against a good fry a few times a year. Queuing up so I can have one shoved into a roll by a surly counter attendant isn't exactly my idea of treating myself.

Not much of a frequenter of deli counters myself, but down the years I have say the people who have served me of them have been very polite on the whole. And when I worked in a deli in college, I made sure I was always polite.

Maybe the lazy generalisations that infest your posts are what betray a superiority complex?
