Well, it is a human rights issue.

Now that they have us paying for water the next step is to restrict the supply.

You have a human right to water. Absolutely correct. It's free to collect by bucket if you like.

You don't have a human right to have clean water treated and piped to your house.

    Wrong.

Water was privatised by Maggie here in the UK. Suppliers can't cut you off if you don't pay your bill so they can't restrict supply.

 The U.N. might disagree with you on that:

    http://www.un.org/waterforlifedecade/human_right_to_water.shtml

    http://www.un.org/es/comun/docs/?symbol=A/RES/64/292&lang=E
On 28 July 2010, through Resolution 64/292, the United Nations General Assembly explicitly recognized the human right to water and sanitation and acknowledged that clean drinking water and sanitation are essential to the realisation of all human rights. The Resolution calls upon States and international organisations to provide financial resources, help capacity-building and technology transfer to help countries, in particular developing countries, to provide safe, clean, accessible and affordable drinking water and sanitation for all.

In November 2002, the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights adopted General Comment No. 15 on the right to water. Article I.1 states that "The human right to water is indispensable for leading a life in human dignity. It is a prerequisite for the realization of other human rights". Comment No. 15 also defined the right to water as the right of everyone to sufficient, safe, acceptable and physically accessible and affordable water for personal and domestic uses.

But by all means, keep making things up and repressing me if it makes you feel good :)

One benefit of the water charge protest is that we can all see the kind of people who we suspected were always there but hidden, rather like when you turn over a stone.

I disagree with the whole Irish Water thing and how it was set up and managed so far, but not so much about the idea of paying for water on a per-usage basis.

Even if access to clean and treated water was a recognised human right, there's nothing to say that those who can reasonably pay for it; shouldn't reasonably pay for it.

" in particular developing countries, to provide safe, clean, accessible and affordable drinking water and sanitation for all"

Whos being denied access to safe, clean accessible and affordable drinking water?

Your local aldi sells 5 litres of it for a couple of quid. Cant see the state blockading anyone and preventing them going to aldi.

How come it wasn't a human rights issue when it was just foreigners in other countries paying for the water or people that had to sink their own wells? Where were the protests for them?

Exactly. I was only saying this earlier. To me the impact the USC had on everyone is a lot greater than water charges.

The legislation introducing USC (by FF/Greens) made no mention of it being a temporary measure. Michael Noonan said in the Dail that it will be a permanent feature of our taxation system. It simply rolled two other existing long standing levies into one. I don't see how anyone can expect that it could be abolished when their is a continuing taxation defecit even when it exists.

People in other countries pay for clean, safe water. We have boil notices in affect in some parts of the country. IW have also come out and said that it will take 25 years to fix the pipe system.

They expect people to pay for something that is not drinkable, and have given us a ridiculous timeframe for the system to be up and fully functioning.

So your happy for everyone not in boil water areas to be metered and paying properly , that's grand, we're getting somewhere now.
BTW , your free to disconnect from the mains and not pay anyone.

We could always stick with the councils and current payment structure and never fix it.
How about those human rights for the ones paying for wells??

Docile minority? Are you actually serious? If the majority weren't docile there'd probably be no such thing as corruption.

And what, pray tell are you doing for "your people"?
