Id say thats because of the amount of people in Ireland backing ireland to win. The bookies lower the odds in case they actually do win.

If you walk into a bookies in England - Id say you would get odds of England -1.
Surely in the age of online betting that's no longer the case?

Most bookies in Ireland will match the UK prices to stop people arbing. The only ones that don't are the smaller independent ones.
look at oddschecker.com for a good idea of the spread between Ireland and the UK.

Personally I think the odds are right, it's going to be a tight game and with Lancaster's 100% win record against us, his team won't be fearful

Last season on this forum, we were being assured that Jordi Murphy is better than POM. I doubt Jordi is second choice Irish 8 either.

I wouldn't say Jordi Murphy is better than POM (although he has been playing better this season) but I do think Jordi Murphy has the potential to be just as good. He is two years younger than POM so still a bit of time to see. I think Jack Conan will be better than both however.

Heaslip is injured and Jordi Murphy replaces him, I believe that makes him second choice 8?

Most debate involving jordi in the 6n was about perceived bias towards leinster players because TOD wasnt in the 23 in the latter part of the tournament last year. I certainly dont remember any Jordi v POM debate.

There was one poster claiming that Murphy was better than POM. No one agreed.

Brown out for them is a loss for sure. Alex Goode is a handy player though. And they looked pretty potent without Brown against Italy.

Jonny May is out of the squad for Jack Nowell. Not sure Nowelll is much use but May has been defensively poor so I think its bad from an Ireland perspective that he's out.

Goode is an excellent footballer in terms of fielding, kicking, passing but IMO he's a bit laboured when it comes to pace.

That's a bit of a blow for us. May is a very poor footballer and would have been an idea target for our kicking game. From what I have read Nowell is a much better footballer and will be better able to deal with it. That said, he's sure to get a lot of attention.

The best try was Girve in 2004 but my favourite is Horgan in 06. The most nervous wait for the TMO ever.

More nervous than against France last year? :P

Ah, the one last year was very obvious I think. I was nervous about the ensuing scrum alright.

Feeling very iffy about this one......we'll miss Heaslip.

I think Ireland will win by more than a score. We're at home, unbeaten in what, 10 tests now (?), have most of our long-term injuries back, SOB starting to motor, a superior half-back pairing, beat Italy by only 7 less than England playing away in a rain-spoiled game where they were at home on a dry day, England conceded 3 tries to Italy. The more I think about it the more I'm convinced this will be a good win.

Tell that to the Connacht boys that played Sarries over there in the Heineken Cup last year. I remember him running in a try that involved him running about 30 metres crossfield and around our defence, David Campese would have been proud of it.

Having said that, it would be a grave insult to pathetic defences everywhere to even call our defence pathetic that day.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭shuffol

Goode is a lovely footballer in attack but at test level is prone to the odd howler defensively.

I like Nowell, excellent player, hasn't much of a try scoring record but is very strong in contact and a more solid option than May.

So between snoozes on the alarm this morning I decided that Ireland are going to win this by 3 penalties and two try's to 2 penalties.

    You heard it here first!

I think I made the squad the other night ;-)

so there are rumours about Jordi Murpy starting but Joe could spring a surprise and pick Iain Henderson instead.

one thing i noticed when they were in Galway last week was how much time Schmidt spent chatting to Henderson

I'd be astonished if Joe selected anyone but Murphy to fill the vacated 8 jersey. Joe trusts Murphy. He knows he will work hard and follow the gameplan to a tee. Henderson is a much better/more talented player, but he probably isn't as disciplined as Jordi. It's somewhat similar to the Kearney/Zebo debate from last year.

Also he is better at the base of the scrum than pom/sob.

Actually not sure if better applies, possesses more recent experience might be more accurate. Still a meaningful point imo.

nice easy game at the weakend - could go either way , being a WC year, not as fazed as normal , bigger fish to fry later in the year ... but still a win would be nice :)

I would rather we win a grand slam than get to a world cup semi final if truth be told. Both would be nice. But definitely a grand slam if I had to choose.

Given we have literally zero chance of winning the world cup I would rather focus on something that we can actually win.

    Bookies say otherwise. https://android.paddypower.mobi/#!paddypower_publication_event_iphone.t?classId=12&typeId=16634&eventId=3130456
so allowing for weight of people 'betting with the heart' and the bookies' built in profit, seems to me like the boffins at paddypower give us a 1 in 15/16 shot.

Which I reckon is about right.

If you think we have a 1 in 16 chance of winning the world cup, I admire your optimism. I however am pretty confident that we could play 16 world cups back to back and we wouldn't win any of them.

We have never won a knockout world cup match, we have never beaten new Zealand, and outside of our 2011 win against Australia, I don't think we've beaten a southern hemisphere team away from home in about thirty years.

To say it would require divine intervention for us to win one isn't too wide of the mark.

We have a great chance to win the WC. Providing we beat France!
If Murray, O'Connell, O'Brien, Sexton and Ross are fit for WC knock-out games we can beat Arg and then England/Aus.
The game on Sun will demonstrate that we are a far superior team to England.
BNZ in the final is the problem! But with all our top players playing I have faith in St.Joe to come up with the master plan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,308 ✭✭✭✭.ak

I see a SF a very reasonable result for one of the top 6n teams. Why not? The gap between the hemispheres isn't as big as it was. Either England or Ireland should be aiming for a SF atleast.

I remember falling in love with rugby after watching that try against Engerland in 1994. Personal faves are Woodies one in the corner and Horgans where he palmed off the tackler nonchalantly.

I would favour us JUST on the basis of home support and a more settled team , though as was pointed out Lancaster teams have no inferiority over playing us away.

The way i see it WE NEED a good start as I dont fancy us playing catch up. The recipe for our recent wins against the Ossies and SA was get ahead and stay ahead. I dont have a major issue with this but i wouldnt like us to try to defend a ten point lead.

IF we get an early lead hopefully Sexton can dictate the game and keep them on the back foot.

Eire abu. Ireland by a couple. SOB or Sexton for MOM

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,308 ✭✭✭✭.ak

Have to say one of my favourites was actually last year despite us losing the game. I just love how scintillating it was and how much planning and effort went into it from all 15 players. It's amazing how if all 15 players do exactly the right thing at the right time then rugby all of a sudden isn't a game of chance. But just so incredibly hard to pull of that sort top draw set piece though.

The WC is the bigger picture , I think or hope , the Irish team have moved on, where winning a grand slam or beating England is all that matters, the WC is the Everst , the world stage - no reason why we can't get to final , beating All Blacks is still the hurdle we have yet to break. We have beaten England many times, very little between the teams , it will be a war of attrition on Sunday.
