Puppies died, but still moving?

    Hi all,

Our shih tzu just had her 3rd litter of pups (3 altogether)
She was looking after them well but on Friday the weakest one died and now today the second one died :(

When I was looking at it, it moved like it stretched or something?
It's defiantly dead, but what's happening?

Also how can we prevent losing the 3rd one?

    Cheers

Sometimes it can be spasms after death. Have you brought the 3rd puppy to the vet ? If not go there asap

To save the 3rd puppy, go straight to the vets asap

It is where a litter die one after another & sometimes no reason is found.

Do you know what the father is? Sometimes bitches pick up infections from males or the other way around especially if they are out wandering breeding with any dogs they find.

No, the last litter was perfectly fine,

The father is a Pom, and fathered the last litter. We only let out her out to pee and for walks but he was always around.

Thought she might of had mastitis but milk coming out in all teats.

Do you mean letting her out to wander? If so I doubt it was only the same dog a year later that got near her. The litter could well be mixed from a number of males.

    Who fathered the first litter?

Seriously you should get her spayed rather then allowing her produce mixed litters.

In the meantime get that last puppy under a heat lamp & make sure the only place the mother pees is an area with no access to random dogs. A feeding mother can easily bring diseases etc into her puppies

No never let her wander, we live In country and she wasn't bothered looking for males when in heat, an it was only the Pom that ever came around.

We were going to get her neutered after she was in heat but the vet said to wait a few months and then bam she had the pups

    Appreciate the advice, thanks :)

If the remaining puppy survives & she has a 6 mth cycle, be very careful as she would be back in heat in 4 mths time & you can guarantee the little Pom will be back for a visit.

    What kind of infections, Knine?

There are several but one is canine herpes, bacterial infections too. You can imagine if the local stray is going around breeding with lots of bitches it can be a problem.

Sometimes though large litters just fade & no cause is found.

you can neuter as soon as the pups are weaned. Don't let the vet tell you to wait-get a second opinion. There's enough pups and dogs in ireland without vets who haven't got a clue.

Are you sure? Was told to wait 2months after she was in heat incase she lost too much blood, so defiantly don't anything like that too happen.

6 weeks are sufficient after heat but please I'm not a vet, get a second opinion..
After pups, once they are weaned and henceforth do not endanger the wound anymore, it's safe. Done it a couple of times and was never any problem.

She won't come into heat until about 4 mths after the litter is born. About 10 weeks after the litter would be ideal as it gives her a bit of time to recover.

This is in relation to the surgery itself, minimising the risk of increased vascularisation, and thus reducing the chance of blood loss during surgery.
