Broadband contention rate

    Hi Guys,

I am currently with Vodafone and have a home phone and broadband package for €37.00 per month, which I believe is being discontinued shortly and the price being increased for the same service.

I recently had an eircom salesman to the door selling me broadband and phone services.

The package includes Broadband for €25 for the first 6 months introductory offer and €58 per month after on an 18 month contract! Along with unlimited local and national home phone calls.

I’m not currently in a fibre speed area however he did a speed check and guaranteed me 7Mbps and even said he’d include this in my contract. Currently on Vodafone I’m lucky to get 1Mbps very early in the morning or late at night, see attached.

He mentioned that the contention rate that Vodafone use in my area is 1:24, he explained this as using one line and splitting it between 24 houses. So basically the more houses using the services in my area the poorer the speed.

He explained Eircom provide one line per customer and thus this insures a better speed and service regardless of peak or off peak times.

Can someone please confirm this contention rate from Eircom and if it will infact make any difference to my speeds.

    Thanks in advance!!

    Hi Clab mor

I have looked in to this in full and my findings are as follows.

While your line is qualifying for up to 7Mb I can confirm that 7Mb cannot be guaranteed as speeds are sold and provided in accordance with the terms and conditions of "up to" 7Mb.

I can confirm that what you were advised surrounding contention ratio is inaccurate, there will also be expected congested and slower speeds at peak time with eircom too.

An upgrade of exchange to NGB (next generation broadband) is required to eliminate contention rate and I'm sorry to say that this is not currently planned for your area. The current infrastructure Vodafone use is maintained by eircom and in turn when the exchange is upgraded to NGB all providers on this exchange will be able to offer NGB.

I am sorry to the confusing information provided however should you wish to speak with a member of sales please contact them via webchat at eircom.net/chatnow or on 1800503303

    Thanks
    Al
