David Hall called to my door at the last bye election. I'm in the area over 10 years and he was the first candidate ever to call personally. I'm not holding out much hope of seeing any this time round either.

At the moment the canvass is a criss cross. Different estates, 100 houses at a time, castleknock/blanch/mulhuddart/clonee/clonsilla - the idea being to fill in the estates between now and the 26th.

Never one area constantly and mixing it up daily.

That's a very good question. For my part, as I'm a political animal, I would certainly discuss with family & friends (that wanted to listen) who had called to my door & what they had to say. I know personally I've had many the argy-bargy with my Dad (92) who previously was a lifelong FF supporter! So I guess yes, a knock on my door does spread. That being said, if the knock was on my Dad's door & I didn't get one it'd be a different story. I have specific questions that I want to address to each candidate personally. In the last election I as really disappointed in candidates that, according to their canvassers, we're "too busy to knock doors". Like I said previously, if you want my vote then talk to me.

I'd have no issue with a canvasser calling to my door, as long as the candidate was around with them and I could talk to them. I think I almost scared Brian Lenihan when he called to my parents house one election. A thirteen year old opens the door and I started grilling him on everything.

Chambers is hitting the greater Navan Road area hard trying to hover up the Mary Fitzpatrick ff vote.. Unfortunately he'd have to hand the money he's throwing at this election directly to me to have a hope of getting my vote.

Roderic has been around the area too.

i know where my number 1 is going, but given he's unlikely to get elected I'm very confused who to give a second preference to.. Labour have disappointed me, and while Higgins used to get the benefit of the doubt i don't have patience for Ruth. Might go to McGuinness to spite Chambers - surprised I haven't seen much of him campaigning.

Yes he will be and in fact Lorna Nolan (independent Councillor) will be working with him in the Navan road area, perhaps even by the weekend. She is putting a team together to work it with him.

Don't worry he'll be there too, not just a team.

I'm a home worker most days during the week, so I'm always around. In the last 10 or so years, probably longer, I've met 4 candidates in the various elections face to face. All of them labour, including Joan Burton, apart from the lone FG guy, Kieran Dennison.

I do on occasion have reason to mail local councillors and TDs over a variety of issues and at this stage I pretty well know who I can expect a reply from and who are helpful, and this does more to persuade me than leaflets dumped in the door without a chat with how they're from.

Also, some representatives don't do any ground work and go with the big ticket items only. Others engage in a P.R campaign of posters, paid advertisements etc and nothing more.

I think you know the answer to this one already, don't you chuck? Anyone with a known affiliation to a candidate putting up pictures of posters or flyers can only be construed as canvassing and therefore I'm afraid we can't permit that. But thanks for checking with us first.

Just read through this entire thread. I must say, it's slim pickings in Dublin west with regard to candidates. I'm a blow in of two years so this will be my first general election in the area.

Would I be correct in assuming, that due to the large percentage (a majority?) of non-nationals who aren't eligible to vote who live in Tyrrelstown, that none of the candidates have any sh*ts to give about the area? I have not seen as much as a leaflet here, nor has there been a mention of the locality in this entire thread (until now, of course).

Oh how I used to enjoy grilling politicians on my doorstep

First up, I'd dispute that the majority of people in Tyrrlestown are ineligible to vote, but that's for another thread.

And secondly, I'll send you all the crap I get from the various political parties in my door to you. The socialists also littered the place with "public meeting" posters over the weekend.

It's a private estate so apart from renters, everyone else will own their houses and there's a large portion of professionals in the area, a cursory glance of the years and type of cars in driveways, and the traffic in and out and both rush hours will show you that. Any candidate would be pretty stupid to think that way. I met Joan Burton walking the area the last by-election I think it was. And David McGuinness lives locally too.

Apparently someone tried my boards.ie password a few times and locked me out. Seems suspicious.

Anyway.

Chambers:

He was in the audience on Claire Byrne last night and spoke for about 45 seconds. He did more damage to himself than benefit. He choked up, looked very nervous and started to quote Colm McCarthy but completely got his name wrong and stumbled through his scripted piece.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else watched this and seen it differently than I?

Tyrrelstown will absolutely be canvassed and just like Waterville, it will be done so with the aid of the electoral register because no one can spend days knocking on doors one after another if large numbers of houses have no voters within them.

Yeah I don't know what the register is like but a quick browse of Maynooth uni's census browser (what a bloody brilliant service btw) shows the area as being somewhere in the region of 40% Irish five years ago, which is why I was asking about eligible voters.

What was very surprising was on Claire Byrne last night was Paul Donnelly stating a refusal to consider scrapping USC. I think that does serious damage to Sinn Fein in the GE. In fairness to Leo who was also on, he said it would be gradually reduced and removed and that's prudent, but SF totally against removing it, contrary to their electoral position of the last 5 years.
