Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Mr. Chambers came to my door (well I say came to my door, my husband was getting into the car and he caught him before getting to the door) today. He had two older men with him. I wasn't giving him any time but he has charm, I'll give him that. He knows how to speak to people. He's the first to come to my door. I've heard Donnelly has been out but I haven't seen him.

We received many many leaflets in our letterbox with updates on Chambers. On every single one of them he said he was continuing to visit every house in the area. What actually happened in our case was that an older man rang the bell, mentioned that he was there on behalf of Chambers, handed us the same leaflet and left. I wasn't going to vote for him anyway, but if I was that world have left a bad taste in my mouth.

I recently sent off an email to Joan Burton telling her I would never vote for her again after she promised to raise the old age pension by E5.00 pw over each of the next 5 years.

Does she not realise that every increase that she gives the old age pensioners has to be collected from the pay-packet of people who are working, and with our rapidly greying population there soon won't be enough to pay all the pensioners or for the other public services that we all need and use

The non contributory pensioners are paid far too much at present relative to contributory pensioners who have worked here all their lives. The non contributory pensioners get E219 pw. against E233.30 pw for the contributory pensioner.

So, for paying into the pension scheme for nearly 50 years, the retired worker gets a massive extra E14 pw. That slim difference is absolutely is disgraceful.

Likewise, you have two married old age non contributory pensioners who never worked a day in their life, living together in a house.

Next door, you have a couple with 3 children, who are out of work for the past year or two.

Guess which family is getting the most off Social Welfare.

The old age pensioners who never worked are getting E438*pw and the couple with their 3 children are getting E402.20pw*

Aren't we the right fools to let this ridiculous situation continue.

And Joan Burton wants to rub even more salt in the wound by giving them an extra E5.00 pw for 5 years. She now sounds like FF leaders in the past. Bribe the electorate with their own money and to hell with the consequences.

    Former Joan Burton Voter

    * The old age pensioners also get free electricity, TV licence and free travel. They also get a Christmas bonus, which the couple with the kids do not get.

The couple with the kids also get E420 pm child benefit

I find my vote is going all over the place this election, my number 1 is nailed on but the rest I'm unsure of the order still.

Had O'Gorman planned as a high preference but was disappointed with his response re Rossan Court so bye bye vote.

Imo McGuinness is massively more appealing out of FF, hell will freeze over before Chambers gets a vote from me.

I saw Chambers gormlessly looking over Martin's shoulder on the news earlier when they were doing the piece on FF putting posters up asking people to give Kenny their number 1.

It is true, any question asked of Jack results in one of the elderly men (old school FF) interrupting to answer the question, including his father.

As he is a charmer, no one will be insulting to him but many have commented that it just doesn't look well that others have to answer the tough questions.

Another sound bite being used by their entourage is 'are you from the country' in an effort to take advantage of the sizable D15 population who are from the country. I'm not sure if that works or not but maybe it does. :pac:

    'are you from the country'

Surely the answer to that, if you're from Dublin, is yeah, I was born in Dublin.

Has Catherine Noone been spotted canvassing yet in the constituency? Had two of her canvassers at the door a few weeks ago, but they said she wasn't out that evening as she was busy with her duties as a senator. Be interesting to see how many votes she can get?

We are out 6-9pm each night and all day on weekends, but he is knocking personally and its the only way to get support.

A lot of doors between now and February 26th.

That's more or less the accepted date now alright.

Pity, I'll be out of the Country, hate to miss a vote and the theatre of it all.

I want to see a candidate personally knock on my door, even if they are a minister. Without a vote they're nothing so we should be taken seriously & given respect. When all I get is a canvasser, I close the door & their vote is lost. I want face to face dialogue on issues such as the economy, the 8th amendment, eu negotiations, brexit etc. I don't want a follower telling me they're "a grand lad". Do they really think that's sufficient?? The mind boggles.

If you were canvassed would you tell people who you know or keep it to yourself?

Just wondering if a canvass only influences that person canvassed or does the word spread that they were around.

David Hall called to my door at the last bye election. I'm in the area over 10 years and he was the first candidate ever to call personally. I'm not holding out much hope of seeing any this time round either.

    Ah for Jesus sake. :pac:

At the moment the canvass is a criss cross. Different estates, 100 houses at a time, castleknock/blanch/mulhuddart/clonee/clonsilla - the idea being to fill in the estates between now and the 26th.

Never one area constantly and mixing it up daily.

That's a very good question. For my part, as I'm a political animal, I would certainly discuss with family & friends (that wanted to listen) who had called to my door & what they had to say. I know personally I've had many the argy-bargy with my Dad (92) who previously was a lifelong FF supporter! So I guess yes, a knock on my door does spread. That being said, if the knock was on my Dad's door & I didn't get one it'd be a different story. I have specific questions that I want to address to each candidate personally. In the last election I as really disappointed in candidates that, according to their canvassers, we're "too busy to knock doors". Like I said previously, if you want my vote then talk to me.

I'd have no issue with a canvasser calling to my door, as long as the candidate was around with them and I could talk to them. I think I almost scared Brian Lenihan when he called to my parents house one election. A thirteen year old opens the door and I started grilling him on everything.

Chambers is hitting the greater Navan Road area hard trying to hover up the Mary Fitzpatrick ff vote.. Unfortunately he'd have to hand the money he's throwing at this election directly to me to have a hope of getting my vote.

Roderic has been around the area too.

i know where my number 1 is going, but given he's unlikely to get elected I'm very confused who to give a second preference to.. Labour have disappointed me, and while Higgins used to get the benefit of the doubt i don't have patience for Ruth. Might go to McGuinness to spite Chambers - surprised I haven't seen much of him campaigning.

    Ah the Navan road.

Yes he will be and in fact Lorna Nolan (independent Councillor) will be working with him in the Navan road area, perhaps even by the weekend. She is putting a team together to work it with him.

Don't worry he'll be there too, not just a team.

I'm a home worker most days during the week, so I'm always around. In the last 10 or so years, probably longer, I've met 4 candidates in the various elections face to face. All of them labour, including Joan Burton, apart from the lone FG guy, Kieran Dennison.

I do on occasion have reason to mail local councillors and TDs over a variety of issues and at this stage I pretty well know who I can expect a reply from and who are helpful, and this does more to persuade me than leaflets dumped in the door without a chat with how they're from.

Also, some representatives don't do any ground work and go with the big ticket items only. Others engage in a P.R campaign of posters, paid advertisements etc and nothing more.

I think you know the answer to this one already, don't you chuck? :) Anyone with a known affiliation to a candidate putting up pictures of posters or flyers can only be construed as canvassing and therefore I'm afraid we can't permit that. But thanks for checking with us first.

Just read through this entire thread. I must say, it's slim pickings in Dublin west with regard to candidates. I'm a blow in of two years so this will be my first general election in the area.

    Firstly,
I couldn't help but comment on this from earlier in the thread:
    AGC wrote: »
......Chambers ......He wants to be a politician and that is what he is going after. Why shouldn't he?

This reminded me of the famous Billy Connolly quote:
I think, roughly, that the desire to be a politician should ban you for life from ever being one.
For me, this rings very true when we have a 24-year old who has never held a job running for office.

    Secondly,

A question if I will, and of course I'll be giving away my location in the process.

Would I be correct in assuming, that due to the large percentage (a majority?) of non-nationals who aren't eligible to vote who live in Tyrrelstown, that none of the candidates have any sh*ts to give about the area? I have not seen as much as a leaflet here, nor has there been a mention of the locality in this entire thread (until now, of course).

Oh how I used to enjoy grilling politicians on my doorstep :(

that due to the large percentage (a majority?) of non-nationals who aren't eligible to vote who live in Tyrrelstown

First up, I'd dispute that the majority of people in Tyrrlestown are ineligible to vote, but that's for another thread.

And secondly, I'll send you all the crap I get from the various political parties in my door to you. The socialists also littered the place with "public meeting" posters over the weekend.

It's a private estate so apart from renters, everyone else will own their houses and there's a large portion of professionals in the area, a cursory glance of the years and type of cars in driveways, and the traffic in and out and both rush hours will show you that. Any candidate would be pretty stupid to think that way. I met Joan Burton walking the area the last by-election I think it was. And David McGuinness lives locally too.

Apparently someone tried my boards.ie password a few times and locked me out. Seems suspicious.

    Anyway.

    Chambers:

He was in the audience on Claire Byrne last night and spoke for about 45 seconds. He did more damage to himself than benefit. He choked up, looked very nervous and started to quote Colm McCarthy but completely got his name wrong and stumbled through his scripted piece.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else watched this and seen it differently than I?

    Tyrrelstown:

Tyrrelstown will absolutely be canvassed and just like Waterville, it will be done so with the aid of the electoral register because no one can spend days knocking on doors one after another if large numbers of houses have no voters within them.

Loads of people have had that issue. (Including me.) It's because of the issues the site has been having. Nothing to worry about I don't think. I ended up having to sign in through the beta site and then was able to use the regular site.

Yeah I don't know what the register is like but a quick browse of Maynooth uni's census browser (what a bloody brilliant service btw) shows the area as being somewhere in the region of 40% Irish five years ago, which is why I was asking about eligible voters.

I thought the FF crew were after me :-)

What was very surprising was on Claire Byrne last night was Paul Donnelly stating a refusal to consider scrapping USC. I think that does serious damage to Sinn Fein in the GE. In fairness to Leo who was also on, he said it would be gradually reduced and removed and that's prudent, but SF totally against removing it, contrary to their electoral position of the last 5 years.
