Not seen it but based on radio commentary it was not hitting full-on - basically if more than half the ball is missing the benefit is given to the batsman

Likewise if it's given out by the umpire and less than half is hitting it's out. Basically it reverts to the "umpires call" unless there is a "clearly incorrect" decision (based on whether more or less than half the ball was hitting as predicted by the system)

    Well done Ireland!!

Is it safe to say we aint great at the bowling, but very good batting?

It's predictive and therefore it is impossible for it to be 100% accurate. The principles adopted essentially fall back on the old system - ie the umpires still have a role to play in giving such decisions (as they obviously do anyway if no-one calls for the replay, or a team has no referrals left)

If we win one more game would we qualify for the quarter finals regardless of other results? What would be our realistic chances of winning the remaining games? I'm guessing the Zimbabwe would be the most winnable. I'm talking about on paper now as I'am aware this team is capable of pulling off upsets

Stronger on the batting at the moment, not sure about 'very good'! Good enough fielding, tight team. We could do with a bit more pace in the bowling I reckon which is why we miss Boyd Rankin who opted to play for England, never mind Eoin Morgan........

    Fair summary?

Nope. There's a lot of possibilities but 1 more win might see us finish level on points with 1 or more others and it could come down to net run rate. Have to get the win though and then see what happens. Its gonna be far from easy but it is doable

In all likelihood Ireland have to beat Zimbabwe and will then need a result against Pakistan (or India or SA), or maybe for the WI to lose a match to rain, as the way things are their net RR is unlikely to see them through in the event of a tie

I had good fun explaining that one as the was a mob gathered around my computer screen. And in fairness, the ball did have a long way to travel. When I first saw the replay, I said "Umpire's Call". But boy, was it tight.

Absolutely amazing match yesterday. It was well worth staying up for.

Kevin O Brians innings was intergal in that run chase. But Wilson was amazing aswell.

Ireland are almost certainly through now.

Ireland are almost certainly through now.

Unfortunately this really isn't the case. I would say our realistic chance of qualification is about 30%

Not a cricket fan but following the results.
Someone mentioned rain above, does that mean the game is voided and not replayed?

If that's how it works, what happens at the latter stages with weather disruption?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,796 ✭✭✭✭Pudsy33

For a game to stand, both teams must play at least 20 overs. If that can't happen, the game is a no result and both teams get a point.

No reserve days for games. Not sure what happens if a knock out game is no result.

    yeah but, the knockouts?

The following day is a reserve day for all knockout games.

The knockouts are all d/n matches so there is scope for two games in one day with no overlap.

Instead I listened to the game without once checking to watch it :) Real heart in the mouth stuff but oh so fantastic. Credit to UAE, they played well and that 100 was excellent, but Kevin O'Brien went from Villain to Hero with that fantastic 50 in 20ish balls. Just a pity he couldnt have stayed in to close it out. Would have saved us all a lot of sweet and tears! :D

    Just checking the playing conditions

In the pool stages, if tied on points, it is decided as follows:

    1. Number of wins in the pool stage
    2. Net Run Rate
    3. The head to head match
    4. Original seeding

Hence 2 rain-offs are not (quite) as good as one victory

In the knockout stakes, if it's a tie, NR or abandoned it's whoever has the better position in the pool stages that goes through

Absolutely it was unconvincing and far from certain. But for the second game in a row there was posters on here writing off the team and the match far too early.

Limited overs has changed massively with the advent of T20 and wickets in hand means a massive score is possible in the last 10overs this means that we will likely concede big scores( especially with our non pacey bowling attack) but we will also be able to get big scores.

There was some serious throwing of toys from the pram from some posters earlier

Dont think i threw toys out of the pram but i was always apprehensive even when we were doing well.

Fabulous contest to watch as a neutral im sure but it put years on me.

So happy i was wrong on this but if it wasn't for Wilson and O'Brien we would be having a completely different debate on this match.

Four matches still to go and i think this will be a wake up call for the lads.Lots of positives came out of that game and i think we will win at least one of the remainder.

Nice one to win, had to work hard for it. Looking at the scorecard it seems strange that Dockrell only bowled 7 overs. And not till the 29th over.

Indeed. I guess it was because Stirling was bowling so well.

Yeah, I couldn't get it to work either. IMVHO, it's taking things way too far to block radio broadcasts. I can sort of live with the idea of TV rights and obliging people to pay to view.

What's next? - will the powers that be 'put the screws' on the likes of ESPN and text updates.............

But then it seems that the international sports broadcasting industry has a stranglehold on cricket and is partly why the game is unlikely to prosper as it should, closed shops etc

After the great result against Sri Lanka I was following this (I won't even pretend I'm anything other than a bandwagon fan). I wasn't watching it but I followed it here and on bbc sport

I was wondering if ye could help me out with a few questions I have. Firstly just from looking at the other teams in the group I'd be guessing today should in theory at least be our easiest game? As in we won't be favourites for any other games will we? All the other teams seem to be ones I'd associate with a tradition of playing cricket?

My main question however is in regards to the rate runs were scored. I can't remember exactly but once we reached about 200 we had maybe 10 overs to go and everyone seemed confident that we'd win but when I worked it out I remember thinking that to win we'd need a run rate per over greater than what we'd managed so far in the game, so how was everyone so confident we'd manage this? I thought traditionally you put your best batters at the start and in the middle of your order and the guys towards the end would be the guys in the team for their bowling ability. So would this not mean you'd expect the runs to dry up towards the end?

And finally, what in the name of god is a power play?

A power play forces the fielding side to put all bar 2 men (or 3 for the batting power play) in the inner circle making it easier to score runs.

If you have wickets in hand towards the end of a match you can take more risks and score runs more quickly. If you need 20 runs off 12 balls, boundaries can make short work of it.

understand what you are saying there totally. think it has been answered though
    BUT

I've been watching it years, just the one day stuff and T20, and still don't know a lot of the rules & regs etc. What annoys me is the commentators. They have all day and all night to expalin things, but I have never seen any kind of explanation of any rule for the lay man. normally sky are great at that kind of stuff, and with cricket being so complicated, you would think they might try a bit more for the joe bloggs armchair fan watching the tele

I would guess the vast majority of people watching on TV have actually played the game, although I fully recognise that may not be the case in Ireland. Imagine what it would be like for them if commentators repeatedly explained rules - it could get very irritating

Obviously the sport is renowned for giving the appearance of having complicated, resulting in the infamous tea-towel:

    51ycb99dLtL.jpg

I personally think the commentators get the balance right (but I was brought up in an area that was obsessed with the game), and I find it one of the best sports to watch on TV (and indeed listen to on the radio) given the banter often displayed between the commentators, which is often very entertaining itself

Have to agree, although this is probably a common thread running through the commentary in all sports. It's pretty rare that any major event commentary would include basic explanation of the Laws/rules. Which is a bit ridiculous really, as for any sport, it is World Cups and major events that attract new spectators who may not know what is happening.

Just from today's match there were plenty of incidents that could have totally befuddled anyone who didn't know the game, and happen pretty rarely -

    1. The Anwar/KOB set of incidents when Kev refused to bowl whenever Anwar bowled. There isn't much the umpires can do, apart from warn both parties that they are time wasting, and face penalties that way if they continue

    2. Amjad (and hence the whole UAE team) getting a first warning for running down the pitch when batting.

    3. John Boy getting no balled (and a warning) for bowling three over the shoulder deliveries in an over

    4. Kevin getting a nasty beamer from Naveed, resulting in no ball and warning for Naveed

Unfortunately for the rookie viewer, the commentators hardly knew what was happening in those instances (until someone told them in their ear), so there isn't much chance of detailed explanations of the simpler Laws!

You're right in a sense but that sense mostly applies to the longer game played over 3 or 5 days. In those longer games, teams tend to be more specialised - your best batsmen and your best bowlers (in terms of getting wickets). Batsmen need to score runs and you pick bowlers to take wickets.

In one day or limited overs cricket like the World Cup, the above idea is distorted, things are stacked towards scoring runs, think TV entertainment. So in theory everyone on the team should be able to bat reasonably well and be good fielders. The bowlers task is really geared towards stopping the batsmen scoring runs rather than taking wickets, though obviously that helps.

It's really two different games and our national team mostly plays the one day/ limited overs format. (The big countries won't let us play the long game much!)

When it clips like that, the original umpire's decision stands on the basis it was not clearly wrong

Just caught the Irish innings on ITV highlights having seen the last 5 overs or so live. A fair bit of luck & 2 excellent innings by Kevein O Brien & Wilson. How lucky did Joyce get with the ball that hit the stumps?!

I'm very disappointed I didnt get to see any of the game, but I'm very happy with the result, the team really showed their character to win that game. The bowling performance in the 2nd half of the innings was too predictable though, it's frustrating to see how easy it is to get the first 5 wickets then throw it all away. No one wants to be too critical after a win but it's really a cause for concern

Data analysis is a tricky thing... there is a saying "the plural of 'anecdote' is not 'data'" because any single point of data tells you very little.

The same applies here, this is one game on one day and to base a worldcup on the outcome is precarious at best. Yes its fun and exciting to watch and unpredictable (can you really say if we played West Indies or Pakistan 10 times we could expect to win a majority?).

Extrapolating from a single game is also precarious... I'm sure you can observe certain traits and repeated actions, some strategies can be review but to make any serious changes based on a single performance would be foolhardy imho.

The best thing Ireland has going for them (other than the talent of the team of course!) is the dread the other nations will feel coming out to play us. They know the difference between Test and Associate is no where near as large as its made out to be and that on any given day, collapses happen and the consequences are large... I mean, imagine a couple of bad calls against India vs Ireland .. it wouldn't take much, and they know it. Fear does awful things to a sporting side... :)
