Growing beard - preventing redness/spots

I'm normally clean shaving all the time but I've decided to let my beard grow out. The only issue is every time I tried to do this I stop after 3 days because I get lots of redness and spots. I also have slow growth as I just look like I have patchy stubble and a skanger tache :pac:

The hairy viking I work with said that the irritation is normal as its the skin being pulled by the hair growing out. He told me to just keep moisturising and using a hot towel on my face to prevent ingrown hairs. I have beard conditioning oil by Percy Nobleman. Is there anything else I can do to prevent the redness/spots?

There's going to be a "hump" depending on the person that can last a couple of weeks for the stubble to grow out enough to stop irritating the skin. You're friend has good advice, use a hot towel to soften it up and don't be afraid to give it a good scrub with a wash cloth when using moisturiser/conditioner. The hot towel will soften up your beard and the scrubbing action should relieve and lift ingrowing hairs. It will still suck for a few weeks, but you can hopefully minimize the irritation this way.

Would using my boar hair brush to apply the oil help?
