Cannot upgrade to Windows 8.1

When I try to upgrade to Windows 8.1, I get the following error message:

"Your PC is running an enterprise version or license version of Windows 8 and cannot be updated using Windows Store. Contact you systems administrator."

I tried contacting MS but it was a pointless exercises, they said I need to purchase another licence of W8.

Can anyone give me some guidance on this?

It means what it says, sorry.

If your laptop is/was a business machine, then the IT guy would have access to the enterprise version of 8.1, and you/they would install 8.1 using a version downloaded from the Microsoft Volume License service centre.

If you got your laptop second hand from some person or store, or you got windows 8 from some site on the net, then you'll need to buy windows 8.1 home edition, or windows 10 home edition when it comes out at the end of the year.

I got this resolved btw. Rather than clicking on the prompt in the bottom right task bar. If you go into My PC and click on the windows update int the bottom left, it updates to W8.1.
