I think Automatic cars are better as they leave both hands free to concentrate on the steering wheel. What do u think?

If the blade and track motors are on the same end its a death trap.

Depends on the driver and their ability to react.

Imo automatics lead to a false sense of security and I've driven both

People who can't operate a gearshift should ride the bus instead.;)

Manual's more fun and much better if you live in an area where you can actually drive a car. But, if most of your time driving is spent in rush hour, stop-start traffic and you're not using automatic, you're doing it wrong.

Manual, better fuel economy, more control over the car. Makes you more engaged in the driving process instead of leaving your other hand free to text while driving as in an automatic.

Automatic Certainly makes it easier to fap when driving that's for sure.

They need snow tyres more than a manual where you can adjust to handle it most of the time.

Most cars have a death blade attached to the front of the tracks, could cause injury if improperly used

if you actually enjoy driving a car choose manual

In theory, I llike automatics. In practice, in 25 years I've never driven one that didn't annoy me. :)

automatic is the next step up from cycling

    Years driving = 35
    Manual = 34 11 months
    Automatic = 1 month

I'm more used to manuals, as it was the first time I ever drove an automatic was in the late 70s and then the brake pedal was wide ??? so you could brake with your "clutch" foot.

Have you ever put your foot down on the "clutch" in an automatic car! It stops rather quickly.

I don't know which is statistically safer. Is there any data?
I suppose the one which reduces deaths and injuries is the best.

    P.S. I can't drive.

First time I ever drove an automatic, I was always instinctively groping for the clutch with my left foot. It annoyed me no end. I couldn't get used to it at all. Plus, it just felt like driving a dodgem or something. I much prefer manual. Easier on the juice and gives a feeling of being involved in the driving process.

    Men drive manual

I like manual and the feeling of more control.

If your safety behind the wheel is dependant on the type of transmission, maybe don't drive.

if you are not able to concentrate on driving and changing gear maybe you should stick to the bus??

Manuals are so much better on hilly roads and just generally driving along Irish roads.

But If there is lots of traffic and wide flat streets then maybe automatic is easier hence the popularity in the USA etc.

My first time driving an automatic was in my friends brand new Honda Accord.I took off with him in the passenger seat and at nearly 20mph i jammed my foot down on the "clutch".We were on gravel so the car went on a bit of a slide...I let him take the driver seat again straight away :D

Manual for proper sports cars, but Auto for everything else.

I like big v8 luxury saloons, so auto all the way for me.

An automatic box is far more intelligent than the average human being, maybe drive an automatic some time and you will understand.

Well, it's difficult to stall one at the lights I suppose and it does (usually) select the correct ratio for the speed and acceleration.

dolanbaker; are u saying an automatic doesn't select the correct gear?

Once the vehicle is serviced and maintained to the vehicle manufacturer an auto box does what it does.

If a manual is giving you trouble with steering and concentrating, perhaps you shouldn't be on the road at all.

I've driven a manual for 17 years and I drove an automatic lately and loved it.

A manual gearbox is not connected anyway with the steering system.

My wife will only drive an automatic, so we have one and will always have one.

    They're fine.

I'm not really into driving for fun anyway - I'm just trying to get somewhere.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,973 ✭✭✭RayM

I've driven both, but I prefer automatic. My car has a 'tip-tronic' manual option if I want a more 'fun' driving experience, but I never bother with it because I'm an adult.

I've been driving an automatic for 8 years, and I'll probably never go back to manual.

40 posts and nobody mentioned fuel consumption. For the cyclists, -autos are harder on fuel than manuals.

There's a reason why luxury expensive cars are usually auto. They're better.

But by all means, please feel free to drive your flea sized manual sh1t box if that makes you happy.

I think the OP is referring to the "multi tasking" aspect of driving a manual where you need to actually do something to get the car to change gear.

Most drivers do it without thinking.

If I ever get another manual, every gear change I'll be thinking: "why am I doing this?"

True true, it is possible to take off in 3rd gear and achieve 100Kph without any gear change in most cars.

Ah yeah. We get lots of snow every winter. In Canada.

If your brakes fail in a manual you can use the gears to slow down, I don't know what you'd do in an automatic.

How does one drop a gear and floor it in an old mans stink automatic?
