    Go home Ciderman, you're drunk.

If you are suggesting they were great first person shooters I might suggest you are, in fact, the one approaching this topic from the bottom of a whiskey bottle!

Edit: I meant to say decent fps that wasn't muck.

So much hype there as well, reminiscent of the Killzone hype on the PS2, and so so much disappointment.
And I'm not saying there weren't great first person shooters on the PS3, just they were multi platform releases.
At least the PS2 had the mighty Cold Winter and the equally wonderful Fire Warrior, right Retr0? ;)

I'll give you Coldwinter which was surprisingly excellent. Firewarrior was pure pish however.

I've gone through 3 PS2s also. The motor which moves the laser goes. I did use a manual workaround to play import games which accounts for one of them I reckon though

It would have to be either my PS2 or Xbox 360

PS2 because of the sheer amount of games it had.
Xbox 360 because of the amount of fun I had playing online/chatting with friends.

If I could pick one, I'd say the PS2.

At the same time, they all work on the PS2, further cementing that console as the best of all!
The PS also hosts Raiden Project, RType Delta, Einhander, Pocket Fighter and Roll cage 2!

I actually stopped gaming for a while when the PS2 came out so might have missed out on some of the best games on the console. 2001 to 2005 were pretty lean years. I had the PS2 but was in college, and between socialising and having a part time job, the only two games I played were Shadow of The Collosus, Pro Evo and God of War.

I had a 360 then from 2006 to 2011. Have just come back to gaming now with my PS4 that I got at Xmas.

I guess the original Playstation was released during secondary school for me so it was what I played the most and have the most fond memories of.

Im having an a guilt crisis about picking only one console now, all my gaming machines have given me fond memories.

I remember when my parents got the amiga 500, it was like a thousand pounds new. It was for doing the accounts. I think the spreedsheet was opened twice on it.. I freakin loved new zealand story, escape from planet of the robot monsters and rainbow islands. Still have the machine but unfortunately either all its disks are dead or its drive is gone.

My parents were stung again for a second hand a1200, this was a great machine for learning computing, but it was the simulator games I loved, like frontier elite and subwar. Shes still going strong, its 120mb hdd is on a sd card now, kinda fun seeing how fast it loads.

Then we got a pc, its been the gaming mainstay since. So many good games, when i first got it i went through the typical backlog, quake, doom, c&c and the heretic and hexen games. Every big pc shooter was purchased and played up until call of duty became a yearly affair. Hooked on many rpgs and stratagy games too, not to mention monkey island and most of those scumm games.

I got a ps1 second hand of a friend in school, i think tony hawks skating was my main addiction, but i loved mgs. Great console, still have it upstairs.

I found a sega game gear at a car boot sale for like 2 pounds, including ristar and some random nfl game. Also got sonic for it. An ac adapter solved its battry eating issue nicely.

Then I got a dreamcast for half nothing in 2002, i loved the analog controls. The games that come to mind as being favorites were soul calibre, crazy taxi, house of the dead and sonic.

I got a gba at some point then, i loved the games but hated the non backlit screen.Still have golden sun

Then I got an xbox, it was a tank of a mschine, but i loved halo, mechwarrior, baldurs gate and crimson skies. I also played a few ps ports like mgs. I also soft modded it for emulation and playing music, great job.

I was disappointed they ditched the xbox so quickly, but I still got one. Mass effect was the stand out game, but i enjoyed the halos and the gears of war games. Loved thr prince of persia reboot too. I went through 2 of the yokes though, nice hardware ms.

Then came the ps3, got into a very japanese slant, playing the maligned but also secretly loved ff xiii games, okami, metal gears. I also enjoyed most of the assassin creeds, enslaved and a bucket lad of psplus games

I got a psp 3000 at an airport, great machine, i think i liked crisis core the most and i played through final fantasy 7 for the first time.

Got a vita then, thought it might be a waste, but i love it, the suspend is perfect for playing jrpgs, i enjoyed killzone, gravity rush and final fantasy x.

My ps 4 is pretty much a youtube machine at the moment, played ok shooters but nothing stand out.

Finally, i just got a n3ds, I already think ill have a decent list of games played on this bad boy.

All of them had at least one great game and features that wowed me. The only one that annoyed me was the 360, purely due to flakey hardware (and that it shafted the xbox). I would have grabbed other machines if i could have, i dont think any were a waste, but the gba did miss a lot of potential with its dodgy screen.

Edit: i do regret missing the ps2 and its awesome collection, some of the stuff has been re-released, but it would have been great to play them ay the time

Very difficult to choose any order, really they all have their place in time. Current generation is probably the mist dissapointing for me though, so many of the games just lack the craic.

    PS1
    PS3
    Sega Megadrive
    SNES
    PS2
    NES
    Gameboy
    PS4

    That's not even an FPS?

Playstation has no stand-out exclusive FPS franchises since the PS2. Few decent ones like Resistance and Killzone but not vital to the console, or remotely as popular, as Halo. In comparison, without Halo the Xbox would never have taken off, and subsequent 360/X1 rely heavily on it as well.

I thought Fire Warrior was pretty good on the PS2 actually. Red Faction was another good one (though that was on PC as well...and technically N-Gage!)

the way I see it the Xbox over the years has generally been aimed at the FPS and Sports fans with cross platforms on the side where as the Playstation has always relied on a more interesting and varied selection of games and exclusives with less generic games and newer ideas. The xbox is still better when it comes to online stability. So far the PS4 is slow to take off with it's exclusives but then again it took at least 3 years into the PS3's lifecycle before the good exclusives started gaining momentum.

Sony never ever produced a system exclusive FPS for the PS2 or PS3, while MS seemed to define a generation with the Halo titles.

    C-64 then so....

Is that a "Console" though? They had monitors and keyboards.... kind of closer to a PC almost no? Like I had an Amstrad growing up but wouldn't consider it a Console

My c64 had a grand total of 1 game on cartridge - "navy seals" a movie tie in to the charlie sheen movie, actually a pretty good game as far as i remember.

the "instant" loading was seen as just a step above withcraft and below a miracle in my house.

Well, the original C-64 was basically just a keyboard. Only reason I'm counting it in this thread is it was my first introduction to gaming. Of all the gaming systems I've had over the years (C-64/Nintendo/SNES/Megadrive/PC's [from 286's all the way up to the current build I have], XBox/360/PS1-2-3-4), the C-64 provides me with my fondest memories.

Games like Elite/International Karate/Impossible Mission/Paperboy/Chuckie Egg/Golden Axe/Another World, provided hours of entertainment and downright frustration.

The sound coming from the TV while the tapes where loading. I actually think I still have it up in the parents attic.

I cleared it up later, they never produced a decent fps, there were of course exclusives, Killzone, Haze, Resistance, but they were only serviceable at best.
The cross platform stuff like the two Wolfenstein titles, Singularity, CoD and the rest were consistently better, which is a pity given how much Sony wanted to compete.

Been playing since the Atari 2600 came out but in terms of the console which had the most games I enjoyed, I'd go for the PS2 just from the Xbox 360 - think that was a real golden era of gaming.

For sheer nostalgia, it's probably the Amiga.

For that wow sensation you rely should try playing something like Rockaroids on the Vectrex.
It's an Asteroids clone played via flashcart on a genuine vector monitor and it's a most sublime experience.

    PS1.

Never owned a console, as I've been a PC gamer since the 486 was around, but the PS1 was owned by everyone when it came out, and had a wide plethora amount of games for all sorts of varieties. Thus have played one when over at a mates, or at a house I was renting a room in. Because of their relatively simple design, they are still being used today, and I've often come across them in obscure places such as hostels where I could hook it up to the TV, and play some basic games with other people.

Its probably from the golden area quality wise, no floppy disks to go blank after a few years, no battery memory that dies out, just CD's and a rugged little console

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,217 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

PS1 definitely isn't rugged. Other than later models they have a CD drive made of spider webs and fairy dust. Early models are a total disaster.

  • My best gaming memory was when I called up to my friends house because he got the Nintendo for Xmas. It was the first time that I played a console.
I will never forget the feeling of excitement when I first played the hunt for red October and super Mario 3. My parents had to drag me out of the house that night.

I remember playing a Pong clone back in the mid 70's, had to be a clone, Pong itself wasn't sold here AFAIK.
I have one of those from the period, Ingersoll, though there were several.
It was an eye opener let me tell you!

After looking through the posts here I was surprised with the amount of people that reckon the ps2 was the best console ever.

I really believe that apart from specs , games etc a lot depends on where a person is in their life when a console is released. The ps2 was released when I began college, I spent 4 years in college, a large portion of the ps2 life cycle. While I had a large library of games and enjoyed the ps2, I was at a stage of my life where I never really got to appreciate the console. Alcohol and chasing tail came first back then, and I lost out on a lot of gaming time.
That's probably why I rank the ps1 as the best console, I was in my early teens, in school, and had any amount of time to enjoy it alone or with friends.
