Scorched Wort?

Did my second all grain batch with Get 'er Brewed Mad Cow Stout Kit.
I've noticed that the wort had a smoked smell.
Also the heating element was black which I originally put down to the colour of the wort ie. Black

Have I burnt the wort and if so how will this affect the flavour of the stout?

Not being funny, but taste it and see.

It has a burnt coffee-ish taste with a hint of chocolate.
There's a hint of smoke in the background.
    Not an unpleasant flavour tbh

Did you scorch the bag too, or did this happen during the boil?

What type of hops did you use(leaf or pellet's)?

    No the bag was ok.
    It happened during the boil.
Not sure of the hop as it was an all grain kit called 'Mad Cow' from Get 'er Brewed.

    Did they look like this?

Anyway, you didn't scorch the wort. Sounds like some hops scorched on your heating element. I'd use a hop bag from now on just for ease of mind. Shouldn't effect the flavour

    They weren't hop pellets.
They were hops leafs and I left them in a muslin bag.
