    Hi all,

possibly more politics than the day to day of parenting, but may be of interest to some - is free, city centre, lunchtime Thursday:
What: "We need to talk about childcare" with Minister James Reilly TD, Carol Hunt, Ciairín de Buís and Nicola Byrne, an EU-hosted event to celebrate International Women’s Day 2015

When: Thursday, 5th March at 12.45pm

Where: EU House, 18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2

    (Sandwiches, tea and coffee available)

The European Commission Representation in Ireland is hosting a lunchtime panel discussion (with Q&A) to discuss the challenges and possible solutions associated with childcare in Ireland.

Participants will be addressed by Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr James Reilly, TD, Carol Hunt, columnist with the Sunday Independent, Ciairín de Buis, Director of Start Strong and Nicola Byrne, CEO & founder of Cloud90, 11890 & Stenics Media.

According to the OECD, the average cost of childcare across its member countries is equivalent to 12% of a family's income. Meanwhile, the average cost of childcare in Ireland represents over 35% of a family's income – even for higher earners, it is 24%. As a percentage of wages, net childcare costs in Ireland are the highest in the EU.

Accessible, affordable childcare has consistently figured in the European Commission's economic advice to Ireland (e.g. it is Country-Specific Recommendation No. 4 adopted by the Council of Ministers in 2014 and figures in last week's "Country Report" http://ec.europa.eu/europe2020/making-it-happen/country-specific-recommendations/index_en.htm ).

With this in mind, the Commission's Representation in Ireland is hosting a discussion on the issues around childcare to mark International Women's Day 2015.
EU House, 18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2, from 12.45 pm to 2.30 pm on Thursday 5 March.

    Places allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Registration essential: contact Brigid Martin (brigid.martin@ec.europa.eu)

    cordially,
    Scofflaw
