Hi, I'm just wondering where in Galway would be best for the darkest sky. I've had a good search on the web and found Connemara and that area which is west up towards Mayo. Is it as simple as the most isolated place = better viewing of night sky?

    Thanks

Useful little site with comparative maps of light pollution for a selection of years, and you can zoom in nicely to get a good idea of what's around.

In general, the farther from Galway and Castlebar you get, the better. Those town have fairly noticeable light domes. As long as you have good local darkness (no street lights and no house lights in view) it's remote enough that you'll get half-decently dark skies. Achill is great, as is Belmullet, when away from the towns. Lots of places may have poor horizons with hills being in the way..

Out past Clifden there are some great dark sky spots such as Omey Island & Aughrus Beg (near Cleggan).

If you want super-dark skies - head to Inishbofin & go out to the west end of the island. Westquarter mountain shields you from light to the east, & the next light to the west is in Boston. It is spectacular!
