If that's true I don't think it'll last long. Evans is a very different persona to Clarkson and the reason why people watch the show is the banter between the 3 lads - that's why it's constantly being repeated .. ratings winner.

If Clarkson, May and Hammond pop up elsewhere I'd expect "new" Top Gear to go the same way as "new" Coke.

I probably won't watch it.. not an Evans fan to begin with anyway.

Yep. A 75 minute episode, which is the final one with Clarkson Hammond and May, will be aired on Sunday 28th of June at 8pm on BBC Two.

New presenters and new producers might be a good opportunity to refresh the format. This was badly needed. The few times I did have the misfortune of watching Top Gear I saw a heavily scripted and forced type of 'banter' and bonhomie between three middle aged men in ill-fitting denim jackets. That type of lad humour was tired and well past its sell by date.

The Stig in fairness is needed to compare the top end cars around the track. Being honest, I think it will stick to broadly the same format.

I like Clarkson. I get his sense of humour. And, as a petrolhead, it was pretty much the only car programme the missus would watch, no need for one of us to dissappear to the bedroom to watch something else.

I'll check out the new series like yourself, but I don't envisage liking it, but probably for different reasons to you.

I don't envisage watching it, but as a challenge for Evans on a performance basis and how he moves the show on from the, well, let's face it, the morass it sank into, that in itself will be worth following.

Hope all the old fans take to it, and that's an honest wish.

If the trio appear on Netflex or somewhere else I will be watching. Chris Evans is okay, I liked him on Don't Forget Your Toothbrush and TFI Friday, whether he would be good on Top Gear is another matter. Like you, I don't know whether a new Top Gear will work.

Old Top Gear was stuck in the 1980's. Before the 2002 revamp, Top Gear was a 30 minute program and used to be like a visual Auto Trader, with them reviewing trackers and buses. It can't go back to that because it will fail. The success of the revamped Top Gear was because of the joking around between the three presenters who are friends in real life, the stunts and the challenges. You can't act or pretend that sort of friendship. Old Top Gear was boring in comparison.

I think The Stig, as a professional racing driver, is essential in shows like this. Other formats like Performance Bikes magazine use the likes of Michael Rutter and Bruce Dunn for tyre and sportsbike comparisons to ensure both objectivity and consistency.

You'd be surprised how difficult it is to be totally consistent from vehicle to vehicle even on the same track. Racing drivers have the skills and experience to do this.

Yes, old Top Gear was just a review show for petrol heads, very much only suited to an early evening weekday slot. Its transformed into a primetime entertainment show so that's where it has to stay. I think it can appeal to enthusiasts and casual viewers too. The revamped Top Gear managed this fairly well in the earlier years before it descended into wall to wall, forced nonsense. There is surely room for serious motor journalism in between all the clowning around and challenges. I don't know how much 'serious' Chris Evans will be interested in though. My only experience of him is TFI Friday and if that's where Top Gear is going, god help us all!

Maybe. Again what sells Wheeler Dealers is largely the real life friendship between to the two lads. So many successful programmes are based on that. (Billo, Giles and Dunphy ) So if they don't get suitable people to join Evans it may be doomed anyway.

Format wise, I think all Top Gear essentially needs to be is car porn. Apart from the presenters, it's big selling point is it allows us mere mortals to see the most desirable cars in the world, usually in some of the most beautiful locations in the world. So have the odd trip / race around Italy in a couple of Ferrari's etc etc. Have the odd challenge incorporating some exotic/harsh/weird locations around the world. Do some actual reviews of some normal cars which people might actually buy, but put a slant on it to make it appealing to the casual viewer. The Stig. Star in a reasonably priced car. If Evans can add to that he's a good bit of the way home already. But his co-hosts are crucial if its not going to be a turd.

I agree with everything else you said but what sells Wheeler Dealers is Ed China. If they got rid of Mike Brewer, I suspect it would be a far more successful show.

I don't know about Ed China, he's great in WD because he's sharing his knowledge and you're getting to see an expert work. It's very interesting. I don't know how he'd fare out on Top Gear. I've never seen him outside WD.

Guy Martin would be great but he has a bit of crossover with Ed in that he's also an excellent engineer.

I think they're going to have a girl in there, it's BBC company policy at this stage. Vicki Butler-Henderson is very good on fifth gear. Her Evans and Guy would make a good team, Evans the Clarkson, Guy the new crazy version of May, and viki is an actual race driver and crazy enough in her own right to boot.

I got turned off that "for the love of cars", they don't even try to hide (or are very bad at hiding) how contrived the show is. They keep going on about how pushed for time they are, when in fact they made all the cars at the same time, sold them at the same show, and even sold two cars to the same guy!

Same here. I also felt that it became an advert for his restoration business. They focussed on the auction price but didn't mention how much the restoration cost.

Ed is certainly the brains of the operation, but i think you need a 'showbiz' character as well. I don't think Wheeler Dealers would have become so big without Mike Brewer. He overdoes the aul cockney geezer thing abit but he seems ok.

Ah no,i think its what Ed shows what he is doing that is the star of the show,Mike could be replaced no problem.


There is a great opening for a show like that where they could show people in detail about replacing easy stuff like shocks brakes etc in an entertaining way.
Even my wife watches it sometimes and say so that's what was done on ours and he charged me so much for that!!


I remember Jocks "The Garage" used to do something similar explain about gears and diffs and how they worked and how they replaced or fixed them.
