He put up the good fight against his illness, which was something that inspired many people.
    R.I.P. Tony.

Major cringe looking back but have a recording on cassette somewhere of him reading out my name on the Hotline when I was around 13 getting With or Without You dedicated to my first ever girlfriend. Felt famous, as did anyone who managed what seemed a huge feat back then. Second only to Larry Gogan for being an Irish voice I would immediately associate with listening to the radio.

    RIP.

Good interview here. Certainly had a tough five years or so.

His presenting style wasn't to everyone's taste but I loved listening to him. His sheer enthusiasm for his job and the music he played always shone through.

Listening to him always brightened up my day. He was genuinely interested in any listeners who phoned in to competitions etc. and instantly put them at ease with his friendly and happy manner.

Also his work in raising awareness of cancer through telling his own story was (and is) very important.

R.I.P Tony Fenton, a legend of Irish radio.

Really lovely tribute on Today FM now. A bunch of former colleagues talking about the man that was.

Must say, Today FM have been very classy today - everything else had taken a back seat so they can pay tribute to their colleague. Fair play guys.

I feel like I'm at the good bit of a funeral.

The bit in the pub the night before the burial.
    Everyone sharing their wonderful memories.

This is magic radio and lovely that some the ex-Today FM
and now RTE staff have made a contribution.

I was shocked to hear this new today while driving the car. Tony just had that great way of drawing you into his show. He had that prefect radio voice and had those natural & calming mannerisms, that told you was genuinely a really nice guy. Tony always seemed like a man that was permanently set to being upbeat and positive. Irish radio lost a giant of the industry today and a lot of us lost that familiar friendly voice that may have brightened a crappy day. RIP Tony and thanks for some great radio.:(

Too young to go. Looked at his Wikipedia page and it says his real name is Anthony Fagan. Was Fenton a stage name?
Tony Fagan was his real name. We were in the same Scout Group back in the 1970s and I remember him and another Scout called Barry Lang started a mobile disco which they called Tobar's Disco. RIP Tony.

Back when I used to listen to the radio, I enjoyed Gareth O'Callaghan at 2pm, Tony Fenton at 5pm and Dave Fanning at 7pm on 2FM weekdays. Always enjoyed Tony's programmes, he had a real distinctive DJ's voice and genuine enthusiasm for every tune he played. May he rest in peace.

Very sad. He used to get me through my days at work for years listening to Today FM. Every time I hear this I expect to hear his voice over the start of it.

    R.I.P. Tony

Ah so sad, truly was one of Ireland's DJ legends. Feel like part of my youth is gone, remember the Hotline printed in the Herald, RIP

Ah that's terrible, Tony was so easy to listen to. Always seemed to be in good spirits and loved hearing his familiar voice on the radio. Strong personality really but in such a subtle way. His wall of sound was always pretty cool too.
    RIP

I must admit I kind of lost track of what he was doing when he moved to Today FM. As a kid growing up though he was the man when it came to the radio. Always fun to listen to, always a good vibe going on with his show. Reminds me of the good times.

Starting this thread earlier after hearing of his passing really was a downer.

A lovely man. Some radio personalities seem nice on air but aren't really.

He was a gent - genuine, decent, warm kinda guy.

RIP Tony - very sad he's gone.

Just spoken to someone who was at the funeral. U2 played a song live in the church apparently. Nice touch.

Ian Dempsey was saying this morning that he's hoping as many stations as possible will play this at 2:30 today. Phil Cawley and Rick O' Shea will be playing it. It would be nice if a few more play it too.

Very touching and intimate interview by Tony with Bono. You couldn't help but feel for Tony as his diminished voice was very evident But so was his dignity. It was funny, at times it was Bono asking Tony the questions as if they both knew the interview was more than just a regular interview. Nice touch by Bono to thank Tony for his unstinting support of U2 even when it wasnt trendy. Great radio, worth a listen.
