Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Was this the main qualifying weekend? Or is that still come?
    No.
These were European championships. The world repechage competitions are on the next 2 weekends. Mens is next weekend in Monaco. Womens is in UCD the following weekend.

What are the implications of this for the men. I know that winning the tournament gets them into the Olympics but how do they get onto the big 7s circuit

There will be qualification tournaments sometime during the year. We're not at that stage yet and if we win in Prague on July 2nd in the second leg of European trophy we will be promoted to European grand prix series and then we will have shot at making world series

As far as I am aware its only for the Olympics nothing else

Thanks for that. Good there's a relatively clear path of promotion through the levels

Yeah, a novel concept! Would be lovely if it applied across the board...

Do you know if the squad can be changed for Olympics if we qualifies? Someone like Niyi Adeolokun would be perfect for 7's

Of course it can but I don't see it changing if in the unlikely chance we do qualify.
Samoa, Canada and Tonga all big wins so far

Quarter Finals, Ireland will play either the 1st or 2nd in Pool D depending on final position.

All 16 go on to knockout day but just top 8 have a chance of making Rio. There is Plate, Bowl finals

I know but was trying simplify it as we're not concerned with the Plate

Spain lose to Hong Kong so Ireland's Quarter final tomorrow is against Spain. 10.43 am it seems.

Watched the matches today and I really thought the effort they put in was terrific. They may not win the tournament but they have certainly gone up another level since I watched them last year.

Hopefully the IRFU continues to support them and that they can ultimately qualify for the World Rugby Sevens Series which is where they would really learn.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,248 ✭✭✭kingofthekong

Mick Mcgrath is some Beast , ran down the wing and flattened two Samoans like they were kids lol

Getting to World series is needed but what we really need is more 7s tournaments at age grade and open club level. The age grade shouldn't be schools/clubs but open competitions and imo better all club based with all representing clubs as this can get those in rugby schools linked in to clubs. There should be regional/county/divisional/provincial competitions
