I consider myself tall at 5'9. I'm female. 5'5, g'way and sh*te, you're not small. Not for a girl anyway.

I was referring to your rhyming skills and not you grabbing all of the inches skills :p

Do you really need help getting things of shelves at 5ft 5? I honestly thought once you were over about 5ft 3 you'd be ok reaching things in everyday life.

Some shops are worse for it than others. Dunnes shelves are not too bad.
    Tesco?
    Feck off top shelves

I think 5" 5' is average for Irish women, isn't it?

I didn't think of myself as really short til I got here, tbh. I suppose I seem shorter because I spend most of my time around men. I work with one chap who is 6"7'. When we go outside for a smoke, people take pictures :(

No, I'm genuinely heavy. My BMI is 28 or something.....between overweight and obese. :pac:

I'm a size 16 but sure it's all boobs I tell myself and no ass.

No, I don't do the high heels too often either. I surf the lower shelves, the high ones might as well be on the surface of the moon as far as I'm concerned.

They aren't, but cant explain the inability to muster the dizzy heights of the "Top Shelves" :(

What are ye talking about? Being short is brilliant. No one expects you to carry things, always enough leg room, sleep any direction you want on a bed, small cars are actually comfortable, ability to scurry, ineligible for the draft, rarely asked to help with DIY stuff. Life is good.

I have often hit my head off doorways (when not paying proper attention.).

    How tall are you?

I think we should marry, to average out the kids.

The super short just don't realise how high that shelf actually is. Feckin miles away.

There's always a compromise Christy. You can have ALL the tall ones I don't want. :)

I would nearly actually prefer to be a bit shorter than 5'5(thats if I cant be 5'7/5'8 :D)
I'm not small enough to be "dinky and cute" and not tall enough to be noticed.
I'm the unloved middle child in the height department :(

Tiny but oh well. Only annoying when trying to get served at the bar, or when people think your in the queue with your parents or something but there actually strangers, and serve other people.

I don't want to buy a stepladder just to clean a vent, but it's looking likely.

Just buy the stepladder Candie. You can use it for other things like your fellow shorties have complained about on here...

Take it with you to the supermarket to reach those top shelf items.

Bring it to a funeral if you need to be a pall bearer.

Bring it to a nightclub so you can comfortably lock lips with a taller guy.

If you live in small town Ireland you might become known for it though. "Here comes Candie and her stepladder..."

I'm going to borrow a stepladder tomorrow

I had a friend who essentially had the height of a child. Random men would pick her up in clubs litrerally and others would always come up to her and push her and laugh etc. She was very paranoid about it but she was quite slim and short.

Helium balloons, the solution to your problem. Just make sure to anchor yourself with a cavity block and a rope so you can haul yourself down afterwards.

I'm only 5 ft 2. I don't mind it for the most part, except when I am buying clothes, as I have very short arms & legs. Most of my height - what little there is of it - is in my torso.

Most jeans/trousers are too long & the arms of jumpers/blouses/coats are also too short. It really pisses me off when shops flog their "petite range". It's just marketing bolloxology, as the legs of their jeans & trousers are usually just as long as the regular ones.

There is an extractor vent in my bathroom that badly needs cleaning, and every time I walk in the bathroom the caked dust mocks me with it's inaccessibility. I can reach it with a mop (just), but it doesn't clean it thoroughly. What I really need is to get up in it's grill and wipe it out properly, as the dirt is compromising it's efficacy. The three-step ladder I have isn't up to the job. I don't want to buy a stepladder just to clean a vent, but it's looking likely. I know a very tall Russian who might help but my short person pride, and a fear of being in his debt, prevent me from asking.

Last week I couldn't reach the ice-cream I wanted in the supermarket, and as a direct result of this lack of medicinal chocolate and sugar, my PMS went through the roof and I went on a killing rampage. Or at least I wanted to. Anyway, I told someone to shut up, which is nearly as bad.

Any AH'ers with small person problems? Or tall person problems? Or ideas for cleaning inaccessible extractor fans?

The first person who pitches up with the short man/overweight woman thing will get a smack of my mop. No negative gender stuff please, for once.

My 4' 11" work colleague announced , dramatically that she was not short ,more fun sized than anthings else.

Finding clothes that fit can be a real challenge. I'm not short short, I'm more on the big side of small which just makes things awkward, especially when it comes to finding a daycent pair of trousers. I have a physique like Johnny Bravo so I feel very uncomfortable in a suit. And before you say anything, no I don't skip leg day, I just can't seem to get my legs on par with my upper body. :( I've been told by the ladies that I have great pecs though, so it aint all bad.

Having to climb the counter top just to get whatever you need from the top shelf. :(

It's bad enough that I am only 5 foot tall but I also look about ten years younger than I actually am.

I frequently get funny looks from bouncers and bar staff when I hand them my ID and they will often try to catch me out by asking my age and/or date of birth. I think they think I'm only a teenager and will try to pretend I'm 19 or 20 or something. Their faces when they realise I'm actually 28....priceless!

I've also been used as a beer mat more times than I can count and now despise the phrase 'you're so short'....thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't noticed!

I've also been picked up randomly in clubs and had people put one finger on my head so I'll spin....I'm not a bloody toy!

Other day to day problems include trying to find jeans, trousers and dresses that aren't going make me look like I am playing dress up in mammy's clothes, stowing things in overhead bins on planes, trains and buses , ending up beneath people's armpits on trains and buses and trying reach things on shelves.

I also have to raise my car seat up as high as it can go to see out properly and hug the steering wheel so my feet touch the peddles comfortably.

    Ah the joys of it!

I wonder if "jokes" aimed at overweight people would be tolerated in the same way?

I'm 5'2 my boyfriend keeps putting the shopping on the top shelfs, especially things I need (like chocolate) and I know it's just because he knows I have to jump onto the counter to reach or grab a chair - he thinks it's hilarious ... I don't agree so much.

Also the sun visor doesn't stop the sun going into my eyes :-(

The jokes are harmless enough as far as I can see, if you're getting so bothered by something so simple I'd say the issue is more with yourself than the people making the jokes.

Having said that, I see your point with the overweight comparison.

Is not all relative enough as at 5ft10 I would be a normal/average enough height...except in my family (cousins etc).... I would look like a leprechaun :/

Honestly I think they would be, within reason. Heard a lot of whale jokes and that sort on boards which got loads of 'thanks'
Also as a short man I can say its not really offensive, well to me is not

Going to be honest here, at 5'9 I'm definitely put off by shorter guys. If I'm in a nightclub I will go for really tall guys but saying that my last 2 bf's, one was shorter and the other was the same height.

Edit: I get slagged on my height and build all the time. I'd be fairly broad and strong. The term 'butch lesbian' is bandied about regularly.
