Nahhh...My brother is 6 foot and my sisters are 5/5.1. So I don't think so.

Yeah, there are far too many other factors at play for the relationship between parental height/offspring height to be significant.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 26,403 Mod ✭✭✭✭Peregrine

But I understood height to roughly be the average of both of your parents, though sometimes it is influenced by heights of other family members like grandparents etc.?

Well, myself and my brother are both around 6'1, our mam and dad are 5'4 and 5'7 and there's no one in the family over 5'10 so I don't think so.

Edit: And no, we weren't adopted :p

its a combination of genetics and environment

we are on average a little taller than previous generations

north and south Korea are a good example of the difference nutrition makes to height

Yes, my family are average to tall and I'm teeny. My parents would be smaller than 3 of the 4 kids.

That's a tragedy for your friend. It's not like you can change your height by much (there is an agonising procedure that involves breaking your bones and painstakingly lengthening them).

And the pity is that I'm sure there is much, much, much, more to him than his size.

I remember seeing a man on the Late Late Show a while back who was hugely bothered by his height and was getting that operation done (which was ridiculously expensive) just to gain 2 inches.

That's mad guys. Never heard of it myself. It seems to be the male equivalent of boob enlargement.

How about telling us all that "tame" joke about overweight people now?

    No? Didn't think so....

Just pull up a couple of chairs, sit down and cool off.

Ha rich coming from you Candle, judging by your recent rants and ramblings

I'm 4'10 but I have a colossal fishtank thats 4 1/2 feet high. I can't reach the bottom of it unless I stand on a chair, but then I'm at an angle where I might fall in, or worse, pull 350 litres of water and 415kg of weight down on top of me.
    And kill my fish.

    :(

It's usually my head things go over.

EDIT: Silverfish is smaller than I am! Thank you Silverfish!

I'm 5ft 4 and I find it so awkward! Not tall but not exactly small either.

It's impossible to find trousers that fit. A size that fits at the waist is too short and a size that is the right length is too big at the waist :p

Can you quit pushing whatever the hell kind of agenda you're trying to push? I can't even work out what it is but it's becoming really tedious.

Isn't that the average women's height in Ireland? If you can't find trousers that fit we're all fecked! :p

Im only 5'9''. I use slip in heel things that fit comfortably into my shoes, they make me 2 inches taller. Cost £4. People have remarked that I look taller (Im 19 so people think I may have just grown), it lengthens my legs. People have actually referred to me as tall a few times since I started using them, and I used to be called short or 'kinda small' often, despite the difference being fairly small. So yeah big confidence boost!

I'm confused, is this your "tame" joke about overweight people jimbob?

It doesn't have a punchline nor does it reference overweight people.

OHHHH, you're avoiding it because you can't back up your points....that's disappointing

I wonder if they make those for girls? Sounds more comfortable than heels for adding a bit of height.

I would say that at 5'9'' you aren't short. You're not tall, but by no means is that small. It's how you feel about yourself that matters most at the end of the day and if the lifts make you feel good about it, then I'm glad it works out for you. :)

Just had the misfortune to follow this whole conversation back to see what you were going ape**** about. Nothing, apparently.

You'd want to calm down, short people are more susceptible to heart attacks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,635 ✭✭✭Pumpkinseeds

The usual problems really, I can't wear a long coat because it looks like it's wearing me. Trouser legs are too long and waist size is either too big or too small. Reaching things on shelves or in overhead cupboards is a nuisance, but my husband is 6'3, so that helps.:D Being short also means that I can see the top of my head in the mirror so I'm really conscious of it when my roots need doing.

Speaking of mirrors, it really annoys me when I go into some loo and can only see the top of my head, because some gargantuan fella installed the mirror. It's a LADIES FFS, most of us are not 6 foot 4.

Also spent five minutes on Saturday glaring at the super cheap bottle of weedkiller in B&Q that I couldn't get anywhere near. Good luck hoping for any members of staff, even ones that had a step ladder.

Most of my problems have been listed already. At just over 4ft 11, besides getting jeans to fit, the sun visor not blocking out the sun one bit has to be one of the most frustrating things ever. It's bad enough that there is barely a foot between me and the steering wheel:(

At least skinny jeans are fashionable, you can turn under the excess and they're not baggy on the waist or butt. I see baggier tops becoming fashionable again, but they swamp me. Try finding 28/29 C bras that aren't for tweens. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,728 ✭✭✭Badly Drunk Boy

Speaking of mirrors, it really annoys me when I go into my own bathroom and can only see my chin. :D Really, I should move the medicine cabinet thing that the mirror is on but I reckon it'd look odd at the higher height. It's probably not worth the hassle, for the sake of stooping down a bit for a couple of minutes while shaving once or twice a week.

I've recently converted to wearing skinny jeans, I've never been convinced they look good on me. The best thing is you don't walk all over the ends of them, and rip them. Also you don't end up with drownded wet ends in the rain :).

I don't bother hemming them, erosion takes care of the excess.
