Anybody remember John Kenny's rock/metal show on 2FM?

Used to broadcast on a Sunday night around 1997/8, using 'Paranoid' and 'Whole Lotta Rosie' as jingles/intros.

Found the webpage on 2FM's old website via archive.org:-

    http://web.archive.org/web/19981205155546/http://www.2fm.ie/

I found a shoebox of old cassettes the other day with parts of his show that I'd taped. Much better than 'The Battle Axe' - played really heavy stuff too (Slayer, Deicide, etc.)

I do remember that show very well, although I always preferred Peter Collins 12'' show on Saturday nights.

It was Peter Collins wasn't it, the guy that does or used to do sports stuff on RTE tv.

I remember it well. I liked him on the radio, he still reports on the futbol.

    Briliant Thread

I do indeed remember Brendan Balfe starting up the station at lunchtime on that day in may '79 I think it was followed by Larry Gogans prog.

I always to this day remember Declan Meehan doing the breakfast show I tought he was great with his posh voice. Mind you he didnt last long at rte

I used to always listen to radio 2 from start up to about early '82 when i switched over to radio nova their music was much better

I always tought Ronan Collinss was mispalced at rte radio 2 i think he moved over to rte in 84 / 85 very bland dj imo.

i dont recall Pat kenny on radio 2 i could be wrong

Kenny did The Outside Track which was all album cuts. All album music show on 2FM in the afternoon crazy thought!

I often wonder where Vincent Hanley would be these days had he lived.
He and Jim O'Neill were my favouites back in the day.

I remember being at some sort of exhibition or show in Simmonscourt with my Mam YEARS ago and Radio 2 had a booth in the Lecture Hall broadcasting through the day. All the DJ's got mobbed for autographs and had these little photos/postcards that they would sign and hand out. I only remember one of them being a tad unfriendly, the rest were pure gents.

Thanks to the OP for the schedule from all those years ago.
Wasn't the late night show called Night Train? I think there was also a show called Lights Out presented by the late Gerry Ryan if I'm not mistaken but these may have come later (early 80s perhaps)

They were treated like rock stars for many years - remember the success of the Beat on the Street gigs right up to the late 90s. Gerry Ryan mentioned this in his autobigraphy. The chosen few DJs had a national platform to communicate to the younger generation of people on an island which was starved of popular colture at the time.

A lot of moving people about in the schedule back then.
My 1981 copy has Jim O'Neill @ 2.30 weekdays. Jimmy and Marty had swapped places and Ronan was on breakfast.
Saturday Folk was on Sunday and Arthur Murphy was presenting Soundcheck on Fri night @ 8.
Declan had been doing Nightmoves at some stage but isn't in this schedule so I guess he had moved on to Sunshine by then.

This is taken from the '81 annual so not sure how accurate it is.

Hard to imagine now but national and local newspapers/mags actually used to publish pirate radio schedules back then too.:D

That's correct but those shows came along a little bit later. The original schedule above only last a few months as Declan Meehan moved to Night Moves, Marty Whelan moved to the Breakfast Show, Jim O'Neill moved to Drivetime, Jimmy Greeley moved to Poparama, Radio Graffiti and Classical Greeley, as well as other changes !

    Hi Twinlerunner

Ah yes i remember Valerie Mcgovern on in the morning

On the Liam Nolan Hour i do remember at some time in the 80s his show was on from 11 am to 12.45 pm the english used to joke about about a hour long radio show going on for nearly 2 hrs

News at 1.30 used to be presented by Shane Kenny in the 80s not sure who it was before him

Music on the move used to be presented by Larry Gogan before he moved over to the new radio 2

Also during the afternoon there were a lot of sponorsed progs i.e Dear Frankie sponsered by Jacobs There was also the Glen Abbey show dont know who was on it.

Didnt Mike Murphy take over the early morning show from Valerie McGovern

Sorry for been all over the place on this

Great post you have done here Brining it all back to me

The events that Gerry Ryan refers to in his autobiography are when himself, Mark Cagney and Dave Fanning used to do personal appearances in night clubs around the country to mainly publicise the Radio 2 night time schedule around 1985-88. They may have appeared at local outdoor festivals also.

I may be open to correction but, I don't think Gerry Ryan performed at any outdoor 'Beat on the Streets' that were really huge for 2FM in the early-mid 90's, in cities (on Westmoreland Street, Dublin..Carrigrohane Straight, Cork), big town festivals and the likes (Rose of Tralee, Ballina festival etc).

This may be an oversight on his part when writing his book.
His talk show was well established by late 80's/early 90's and he was no longer a music 'jock' and he would always dis-associate himself from this stuff anyway.

These 'Beats' drew crowds of 30,000+ and would have featured Electric Eddie, Tony Fenton, John Kenny, Barry Lang, Mike Ryan (Gerrys brother) etc etc and whatever Irish up and coming pop acts were on the scene.

The 09.00 - 10.00 slot was a music request programme. I remember Maire de Barra presented on Wednesdays but I'm not sure who presented on the other days.

I think that by the late 70s the sponsored programmes were only between 1.00 and 1.30 but I could be mistaken.

At 2.00 p.m. Marian Finucane presented Women Today. She got a Jacob's Award for it in 1979.

I think there were Children's Programmes from 4.00 p.m. I remember "Knock at the Door", "Young Musician of the Future" etc.

Morgan O'Sullivan presented Late Date from 11.00 p.m. also getting a Jacob's Award in 1979.

Wasn't Harbour Hotel on at around lunchtime? Followed by either the news or The Glen Abbey Show? I'm trying to remember - what stands out to me is the morning I heard John Lennon was dead on the news - Radio One Newsreaders were very sombre/serious those days.

What a great variety of programmes back then, that's exactly the way I remember it before the station decended into absolute mediocrity.

Glen Abbey presented by Frank Kelly (yes, really).
    Imco presented by Gay Byrne

If you want to check old schedules for radio or tv The Irish Times archive is great. My local library has a subscription, just bring your laptop and use the wifi, you can then access the archive.

"THIS IS JK ON THE RADIO!" in a dirty scouse accent. It was an amazing show. The notion of an Irish underground scene had never crossed my mind until I heard John Kenny utter the words "black metal band from ... Drogheda" :D Such a great show. Would love to see its return!

Used to love the metal show, i think it ran from around 1991 to 1997. Used to record songs from the second hour of the show 'the sound cellar top 10', i have been lucky enough to track down some of the albums from the early 90's that were in the top 10

    Artist: Disincarnate
Album: Dreams of the Carrion Kind

    Artist: Sinister
    Album: Cross The Styx

    Artist: Baphomet
    Album: The Dead Shall Inherit

    Artist: Sentenced
    Album: North From Here

Yeah I remember this show. Sunday nights doin' the homework with a bit of "JK on the radio"
He used to have a demo section and he played my bands demo a couple of times. Still have it recorded on a tape somewhere.

Much better than 'The Battle Axe' - played really heavy stuff too (Slayer, Deicide, etc.)

this link is broken but thanks for posting anyway , reminds me of the old anorak section on radiowaves , more links like this are always welcome

The 90s is considered the golden age of 2fm, but I always thought back then, that most of it sounded too old and middle of the road to be a youth station.

John Power replaced Michael McNamara around 1999 think it might have been early 1999, it was whenever lyric launched as both Michael McNamara and Lorcan Murray left 2fm the same time to go to lyric, i think Shane O’Donoghue replaced Lorcan Murray in the saturday and sunday slots or maybe Larry Gogan did 1 of those slots? memory is a little hazy on this sorry

Different times. 2FM ruled the radio dial up to the late 90s.

It's kind of hard to believe now that there was a Country and Irish show with Alan Corcoran (Fr. Brian D'arcy with the gig guide) up until early 2000!!

yet if they were catering to a radio 2 type audience the schedules would give fantastic lineups

Gerry Wilson's phone in show, is it rose to tinted glasses or was it actually an entertaining evening phone show without resorting to the skangerfests they are today? Whatever happened to him?

"Get it off your chest" on 2830222!

Gerry is a V/O artist and pops up on Christmas FM

I remember Gerry Wilson's Dial A Number 1 Show. You selected a song from a list of No. 1s on the paper and then rang 2FM (remember: no texting in those days!). I was on it 3 times! You had to have a rather trivial conversation with Gerry over the airwaves about hobbies, weekend activities, holidays, etc, before you got to give your selection!

During the spring of 1989, some transferred from Millennium Radio to 2FM, e.g. Nails Mahoney (Brian McColl of 98FM) and Gareth O'Callaghan (now with 4FM). Scott Williams arrived after Millennium Radio's closure and was on 2FM briefly for the early summer OF 1989, before departing for Capital Radio (now FM104). Scott is now the Chief Executive and breakfast presenter of Q102.

Moving on to 1992 and 1993: Aidan Leonard rejoined 2FM after the closure of Century Radio (having been with 2FM previously in late '88 / early '89) ...and a bit of pest extermination! Suzanne Duffy was also a victim of Century Radio's closure, doing a stint with Rock104 before coming to 2FM.

Nails Mahoney left 2FM in the early '90s for Atlantic 252, whereas Dusty Rhodes came to 2FM from Atlantic 252 in 1994.

Some of the 2FM presenters mentioned above are now connected to Today FM: Ian Dempsey, Tony Fenton and Bob Conway ("swing jock" - main gig with East Coast FM).

So at one point 2fm was live 24 hours a day?

    2300 Uaneen Fitzsimons

Uaneen was a great talent on the Radio and on No Disco on Network 2. There was huge shock when she was died in a Traffic Accident in 2000 RIP

Yes, a big shock alright. Dave Fanning was very upset at the time, I remember.

One of the curious things was that Donal Dineen was replaced by Uaneen as presenter of No Disco when he left RTE in 1997 for Radio Ireland/Today FM. After a long time with Today FM, Donal was let go and has ended up this year with 2FM. Strange how things work out.

Is that Peter Collins who went on to Formula 1 commentary?

He used to have Fr. Brian D'Arcy as a regular guest so not really a skangerfest at all.

I remember listening to this show while cramming for the Leaving Cert.

Also, used to love the 'My Favourite 5' segment on Mike Maloney's late night show.

So at one point 2fm was live 24 hours a day?

There was a time when automation systems were unreliable to non-existent (and voice-tracking impossible) so if you wanted to be 24 hours, you had to be.

I believe 252 in its early days had non on-air staff in overnight to "mind" the automation until they were happy with its stability?

I think A252 didn't have an automation (or tape) system in the early days overnights, it had 'spinners' in to play the music and ID's
