Vardy and Rashford on for Defoe and Sterling

    I'm hoping for a Stones/Hart cock up :p

edit, forget that Vardy from a Lallana assist. Good quick play

Both strikers score for england. I felt Rooney shouldn't have been first choice for england the last couple of years but the argument always given is that he is top scorer in qualifying. The likes of Defoe starting and taking pens would have easily matched what Rooney did in the last qualifying campaign .

Bad result for Khazakstan, be tough for them to even get a playoff spot now.....................................

But on a serious note, what a godawful afternoon of soccer!

Is there anything in football duller than England qualifying for major tournaments? They are always in piss easy groups. Even their fans must be bored by it.

They should be grateful to Steve McClaren that he gave them some excitement in managing not to qualify them for Euro 08.

That is as much down to the fact that they had a half decent group to get out of.

    For once.

I imagine that is the main reason fans from England tend to hate international breaks.
At least the vast vast majority of our games are interesting, even if we don't please the so called self titled purists with "good football".

Yup hindsight and I told ye so. Always a good basis for a factual argument....

Whether they COULD do it is irrelevant, he did do it and that's all that matters and he did it more consistently than those before him, so where you're so confident those after him can do the same is beyond me

Not really I said it before the euros there are a number of strikers in england that giving the opportunities Rooney was given in qualifying would have produced the returns Rooney delivered. I'm taking about from 2014 on when it was clear to me that Rooney was in decline and was getting picked on reputation. I'm not talking about his england career as a whole as he was clearly the best option they had for the majority of his career. A manager worth his salt wouldn't have had Rooney in the team in the last euros.

SFA were offering free buses from the city centre to Hampden to try and encourage fans to go to the game. NI 1-0 against Norway after 90 seconds. Would be a big three points for them.

I think they've had it with Strachan, to be honest. Also, Slovenia wouldn't exactly be big box office. Add to them the fact that the Scots really aren't very good at the moment.

Did anyone notice if there was a minutes silence before the ni game in honor of McBride or McGuinness? Hope they had the class to recognize them.

Missed the start of the match myself, can't believe how poor Norway have become

It was a minutes applause and it was for McBride. It was impeccably observed. No mention of McGuinness. He was an RoI fan, so I doubt that he would have wanted one at an NI game.

McGuinness was a republic fan but in the summer he wanted to go go to a few ni group games except foster threw a sectarian fit and would not approve.

I thought in the spirit of sports inclusiveness there should have been a minute silence for martin too!

We had a few at republics games after a couple of ni fans where tragically killed during the tournament.

Scotland pulled a 1-0 out of the bag, should keep Strachan in the job to struggle on for a few more months.

Massive win, i could see this group being the one that loses out on play-off with worse second place though.

That's a big result for Scotland, they've given themselves a lifeline and they still have Slovakia (h&a) and Slovenia (h) to come so it's in their own hands although it's hard to see them doing it.

Group E looks interesting, Poland as good as qualified but then you have Montenegro/Denmark on 7pts and Romania/Armenia on 6pts so all to play for there to grab a play off spot.

The Swiss make me laugh, the fcukers seem to romp through qualifying but do fcuk all at the final tournament. 5 wins from 5 so far and are as good as qualified (yes I have an irrational hatred for he Swiss).

keep politics out of football? Good luck with that. Northern Ireland wouldn't exist as a football team if it weren't for politics.

no country would exist without politics if you want to bring that to the table. It is pretty clear what the poster is trying to say. Martin McGuiness politically affilliated himself to the Republic, sure he ran for presidency only a couple of years ago!. That is why he got the minute applause with the other few figures.

This is not the thread for this discussion. It is a football thread so lets leave it there maybe before it gets out of hand.

exactly - why do people have an interest in international football? Essentially it's a display of national pride.

We don't have to fight in the trenches any more to show how much we love our country. Just display a flag outside and cheer on the boys in (insert colour here)

Bolivia lead Argentina 1-0 at half time. Messi banned for 4 games, 5 and a half hours before kick off. Without a doubt one of the most corrupt and vindictive bans I can remember in any sport I follow. Messi banned for cursing at the referee, despite the referee's report saying that he did not hear any offensive language from Messi. Also videos doing the rounds of a Chile player cursing at the ref in the same game and there's no FIFA ban for him. The consensus seems to be that this is FIFA's retribution for Messi skipping FIFA'S "The Best" in January. Corrupt behaviour from a corrupt organisation.

Looking forward to you clamouring for a 4 game ban every time a player curses at a referee. Rooney might never football again.

Messi should make a mental note to add "cursing at officials" to the "Don't Do It" part of his brain.

Certainly should be banned. It's a complete disgrace the way players treat officials and they get away with it constantly so I have no sympathy for any player who gets banned for abusing officials.

Argentina look a right mess under Bauza & going to Bolivia ain't easy even at the best of times.

I got an infraction for trolling as a soccer forum newbie for giving examples of Messi being a bad guy.

Messi cursed at the assistant ref.

Love that the governing body of a global sport have vindictively banned a player purely for the purposes of revenge and smoothing their own egos and some "football fans" on this Board actually have a go at the player being banned. Like it's almost taken for granted at just how corrupt the governing body in this sport is. It seems something akin to Stockholm Syndrome.

Bauza is dreadful. Imagine having quality Argentine coaching options available and constantly picking poorly. Meanwhile Brazil, thanks to the correct coaching appointment, have turned their campaign around from looking like they could miss out on the World Cup to being the best team in the continent. Incredible what good coaching can do.

Where is this consensus opinion coming from?
