Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

As previously stated we could finish anywhere from 1 to 4 in this group which is a first for quite some time. Our current group - deep breath - is very tough compared to others and if - big if - we some how finish 3rd then maybe thats where we are relative to the teams above us. However this wc group is different and we may get out of it..

I'm not saying you were, but it's funny that I remember at the start of this campaign how quite a lot figured this should be an easy enough group to get second in. Sure, we've got plenty more talent than Scotland or pfffttt, Poland, and should be beating them with ease.

There are a hell of a lot of delusional Irish football fans when it comes to how talented our team are, both on and off boards.

I think most people thought our current group would be tough. There's not a huge amount of difference between ourselves, Scotland and Poland. We're probably weaker than the other two but three quite average sides.

The optimism comes from the fact that despite being seeded two pots lower than the current campaign we've ended up in a similar enough group - perhaps even better considering we have Wales instead of Germany.

Who could do a better job than O'Neill and Keane?

Where did David O'Leary end up?
Thought back in the Leeds days he could have been worth a punt!

Irrelevant, things need to be fixed from the ground up.

Fixtures released. Start off in Serbia and finishing in Wales. Three away games from first four matches for second campaign in a row but on the flipside that leaves us with four homes in last six. Not sure whether that's good/bad/indifferent.

Every game could be pretty difficult.

Home games are huge. Gotta win those to be in with a chance. Obvious I know but it's definitely a group where every team will drop a good few points

Austria at the moment are a much better team than most people here realise, they'll beat Ireland no bother

Yeah, I can't see qualification coming from that group. I think it will be an extension of the current campaign, i.e. we'll be well out it by the time the last round of games come around. MON and RK will be well gone by then. I can't see them making it past the current campaign. Wouldn't be surprised if they are gone after the Georgia home game, as the campaign will be dead in the water at that point when we fail to beat them.

I think a trip to Austria would be quite nice, once the game is in Vienna. Can't see us taking anything from the game but Vienna is a wonderful city to visit. Serbia would be a definite for me. Proper hostile football fans who don't go in for any of the happy clappy modern day bonding nonsense. Not talking about violence, just a proper hostile atmosphere at the game.

Interestingly, as per the latest UEFA coefficient ranking (which is a lot more accurate than FIFA's system), we were ranked above all the teams in our World Cup qualifying group. Now, if/when we don't qualify for Euro 2016, we'll probably fall below Austria in the next edition of UEFA rankings (which will be used for the Euro 2016 draw). But we'll still be ranked ahead of all the others. Our position will still be buoyed a bit by our 2012 qualifying campaign, a lot of our better players having since retired. but it's still a better system than FIFA's.

As others have said, those teams are probably at least equal to or (more likely) better than Ireland on paper. But given we could've gotten Spain, Italy and Poland from the top three pots, it's not a terrible draw.

Austria are 10 spots ahead of us in 13th place whilst we are ahead of other two.

While changes on the ground are always welcome maybe sometimes we have to accept our small pool size compared to others? Good patches and bad patches come and go but ultimately we are at our natural level.

No, despite our size we have the ability to outclass anyone in the world.

Don't be fooled by their mediocre club and international careers, if we just picked the likes of Andy Reid, Stephen Quinn and Wessi every game, the group would be a cakewalk

We should also pick Jack Grealish, Kevin Nolan and Wayne Rooney, it's not rocket science

I've watched every Austria game this qualification period and they've played very well, they've only dropped points in a draw to Sweden where they were by far the better team

I think it'll be a good excuse to go visit Belgrade alright, hopefully the Orthodox Celts would put on a concert for the occasion too :D

    Qatar 15 (fifteen) - 0 Bhutan
    UAE 10 - Bhutan
    Kuwait 9 - 0 Myanmar

    And various other 6+ scores

    General observations :

Odengaarde is on the bench for Norway at just 16 years of age. Haven't seen him play but he must be exceptional.

Also pirlo is still rocking the midfield for Italy. Was sure he would have retired and lived it up in the US.

    The Dutch are going out.

Australia were surprisingly beating 2-0 by Jordan and might have to go through the play-offs. Japan are literally in the group of death with Afghanistan and Syria.

North Korea drew, wonder how that match will be reported in Korea.

Also where are Syria playing their matches, can't imagine it's a safe place for any team to travel to.

A korean win with illustrious leader Kim Jong Un with a hat-trick. Strike that, with 6 goals. Because Aguero got 5 recently.

Suicidal defending there from the Afghani's, heard they were caught on the break after bombing forward in the second half, Syria's shoot on sight and take no prisoners tactics obviously paying off.

Argentina vs Brazil has been postponed due to wet weather & will now be played at the same time tomorrow

Fabulous goal from Argentina, Di Maria with a great bit of work and skill, Higuain with composure and a great pass and Lavezzi. 1-0 Argentina.

Argentina have looked the better team and Di Maria has been the best player on the pitch so far imo. Brazil do look dangerous of course.

Brazil are shyte, best thing that can happen to them is not qualifying for the wc.

Why is Neymar wearing that headband?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,292 ✭✭✭GreNoLi

Good finish, Brazil do have a bit of an Indian sign over Argentina in competitive matches.

Well Douglas Costa didn't start but the second he comes on he changes things. He hit the post and Lucas Lima puts the rebound in. 1-1 now and more to come I'd imagine.

lots of pressure from Brazil, they look more likely to nick it
