I'm watching this at home and cringing ... It's pathetic... Des Cahill yawn

    Why would you be cringing?

Also, RTE are not responsible for what is in the parade in fairness.

Just turned it on, not showing off Dublin at its best so far. Won't be watching it for long. Not exactly exciting.

That's the BritPop float... There's a guy dressed as Liam Gallagher going around saying "alll righttt" and nutting people in the crowd...

Some of those kids on the bikes weren't wearing a helmet, not a good idea really. Anyway, by and large it was fairly dull except for Sproai, the weather related one was probably the best IMO.

Seems like the parade has become more of an advertisement for drama groups (and VW) than it is to do with Ireland or St Patrick's Day..... Way too many brass bands playing the same tired old cliché songs... Though I did feel sorry for them trying to play a musical instrument in the cold... I saw the last band walking through and one kid looked so cold I think his hand was stuck to his trumpet... ehm... ye know what I mean.

This is the second year that a car manufacturer has got to buy their way into the front of the parade. I understand that it has to be paid for, but at least make the corporate sponsor the second or third thing in it. They'd get the same amount of coverage & we'd retain our dignity.

You mean ahead of the President, actually what am I thinking, of course.

Could vw at least have green/white/gold cars in line

How about black yellow and red, slightly more realistic.

I second the wolfhounds leading the way or they could let Blaithnaid off the leash, followed by the presidental car? is there ever any representation for animal groups at the parade? dogs, horses? dolphins?
Be nice to see a load of dog walkers and some horses, obviously taking up the rear, so everyone doesnt have to walk in any sheet, be about right for our streets too.

When you are actually there, the brass bands are the best part imo. It may not come across on the telly, but they get people pumped up. These high falutin theatre groups look great on the telly, but they don't make much noise, or give people anything to do, other than go "oh look, yet another cute chisler dressed up as a daffodil." Once 50 of them have passed in front you, it gets a bit boring. The brass bands are much more lively.

Anyone else watching the parade live on Irish TV?

They were airing live from the Armagh parade, presumably as it's the ecclesiastical capital of Ireland seeing as they couldn't stop mentioning it during the entire parade! :D

Transmogrification was RTE's word of the day at the Dublin parade.

    God knows why.

Is it Peter Robinson turning Joe Biden's mortification into wine?

Quite enjoyed it on d'telly. The fox and owl were great as was the Japanese display, the weather display and some of the bands.

I did too. Methinks people are expecting a wee bit too much in the excitement stakes, just because it is on the telly. It's a parade, not a Die Hard movie. Seeing as it features lots of kids, teenagers and amateur dramatic groups/theatre companies with limited budgets, fireworks and explosions are probably not going to be the order of the day.

Still, its a massive improvement on parades from my childhood, when the highlight was always the Aer Lingus float, featuring a cardboard plane covered in crepe paper rosettes, that the green ran out from if it rained. My da worked for AL and we could never go home until we saw that. God, it was tedious wait ! :(
