Cutting costs, employing a QS

Hi All, looking for advice from people who have been through this or know a lot more than me.
We got most of our quotes back yesterday for a 50sqm extension and roughly 50sqm refurbishment, the prices that came in were high, too high for us but as our architect said we can cut a lot of stuff out (the garden, a new boiler, attic floored are a few).
Should we try and get the prices lowered ourselves or will a QS be able to do an infinitly better job at getting the costs down.
    Cheers
