Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can't say no at that price, don't actually have telly that needs it but won't eat anything. Can you sideload the more dubious streaming apps to this I wonder? It seems like DNS can be changed so more useful for those who want Netflix from other regions than the Chromecast which is a pain in the hole in that regard. Cheers OP, hopefully your guess at the price is right.

It should be a yep to sideloading...;) It's the same as the Fire TV but 1GB and Dual-Core instead of 2GB and Quad-Core.

Hopefully. But they may match Euro for Pound, which would put it at £19.
I'm guessing they'll have to launch it at a competitive price as the Chromecast 2 is due out this summer and Dell have a stick coming too.

I have a friend in Germany, so 2 x €19 would be impossible to refuse :D.

Also the Nexus Player is being released this week.

Can I be really ignorant and ask what are the true benefits of something like this?

I have a Sony Smart TV if that makes an explanation any easier

Can This be delivered from Germany to Ireland?

At that price its worth a punt just to test it out and/or have in a 2nd TV.

Can it run Netflix or have they gimped it for prime use only?

    Anyone use here in Ireland?

Is there an app on the TV for streaming content from your PC/phone/tablet? If yes, not many extra benefits to be honest. Although if it's possible to change regions for apps like above posts mentioned that'd be a big advantage.

Yeah, it will run Netflix. Definitely worth grabbing at this price.

Probably not, they don't deliver the fire TV to Ireland so presume it will be the same with the stick

    It depends.

If you get movies from Amazon Prime then this is a no brainer.

You can sideload Kodi, that makes it a no brainer for me specially at that price

Netflix have hardcoded the Google DNS IPs into their app for performance reasons, so changing the DNS on this thing probably won't work. But for €19 I am willing to try this out and see.

Absolutely nothing to do with performance reasons, it's purely for licensing reasons

any direct link to it to buy ?
    thanks

Maybe licensing reasons were part of it, but a lot of US ISPs provide routers to their customers with substandard DNS settings through their own servers, so by hardcoding the Google DNS settings into the app, this gives non-technical people a huge performance increase.

It can, but you will be limited to stereo sound and there are a lot of issues.

You can look around their forums for info.

I'd guess postage to the UK will be free.
Not sure how much it might be to Ireland, but probably qualifies for Free Super Saver Delivery at £25.

Without Amazon Prime TV in Ireland this thing doesn't look so great.

    Will xbmc run on it?

    Will xbmc run on it?

Yes,needs to be side loaded, plenty of tutorials if you google it

  • Registered Users Posts: 95 ✭✭Kleine Hundin

You can use a service like smart dns and set it directly on the device unlike chromecast and open up a lot of apps like PBS, iplayer, Hulu Plus,

I have a fire TV already, and it is relatively easy to mix apps from different amazon stores and side load them. But even without smartdns, netflix would work since it is available in Ireland. Kodi (formerly XMBC) can be side loaded

Does XBMC require a local server like Plex on your PC to run the apps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,807 ✭✭✭ablelocks

Courtesy of BA, I already have an xbox 360, xbox one, chromecast, NOW TV/Roku box (rarely used) and an apple tv (US refurb)

apart from it being only €19, there really is no rational reason to buy this, is there?

Is parcel motel from UK site going to be the only delivery option on this as Amazon UK and .DE won't ship the fire TV outside the respective countries

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,256 ✭✭✭✭km79

I am in process of setting up the old 360 to a mice computer monitor in the spare room
would this be a useful addition to it or can I run internet TV through the 360 as it is with whatever XBMC is :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭mailforkev

I have one of these from the US in our bedroom tv.

I don't have Prime (which the Fire TV is really set up for) but I have Kodi loaded into it and we use it for Netflix also.

Kodi was very easy to sideload and you can set it up with its icon on the home screen quite easily too.

It's a significantly quicker performer than the ATV2 I have on my main tv.

    Would recommend.

Have a chromecast, but kinda tempted to buy one of these and sell the chromecast to cover the cost. Is it worth it? Someone decide for me!:P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,920 ✭✭✭dashcamdanny

Tempted by this, But the NowTV roku box does everything I need.

Comes down to Plex Vs Kodi surly .

Anyone know if we'll have to use Parcel Motel to get this, IICR Amazon only shipped the Fire TV to UK addresses when it was first launched.

Or anyone reckon/know if the Fire Sticks will be OK to send to ROI?

Also, I wonder will we have to sign up to Amazon Prime to get this at the discounted price, like they did with the Fire TV pre-orders last October?

Thanks OP, wouldn't have known about this otherwise! :)

£35 unless you want prime. I'll stick with chromecast for now I think.
