USB drive is write-protected.

    First off, I've Googled this, and have tried various things like formatting in safe mode with command prompt, CMD as Admin, Diskpart, and so on.

    I've gone into the registry editor, as was suggested on many sites, and cannot find the value: StorageDevicePolicies. It's just not there. I followed the path as directed in this picture:

    Here's what happens when I try to untick the Read Only box:

    The same error message appears when unticking the Archive box. Most files only have the Archive box ticked.

    I have also tried destructive write testing with HD Tune. That keeps giving me errors when trying to write to disk.

    Any other suggestions?

    I'm assuming it's a pen/flash drive, and you said you already formatted it.

    I had a dodgy pen drive that refused to complete a standard Windows format. Tried everything.

    Eventually, I found this utility, free for personal use, and was able to format it with that.

    It worked then, but if you're having these issues, then I wouldn't rely on it to store/transfer important data.

    Very first thing to check: is there a hardware write-protect switch on the drive? It can be a pretty easy thing to overlook

    I was doing this for a friend.
    What he failed to tell me was that there had been a power surge in his house.
    It wasn't until I tried to transfer some of the files over, that I noticed another problem. Got the "cannot read from source" error message. That's when he told me about the power surge.

    Basically the drive was ****ed.

    28064212; it didn't have a switch. First thing I checked for. :)

    Thanks for the help, folks, and sorry for wasting your time.

    Tesco offered him a €10 voucher, and offered to replace it. He's just afraid to bring it back because there's porn on it. :)

    Try another PC if you haven't already done that.

    If Tesco comment on the porn, thank them politely for getting it back working, and ask can you have it back.
