Rear windscreen for W140??

    Hi,

I'm finding it impossible to source a cheap (as in ~300, 400 EUR) rear windscreen for a '96 S class Mercedes.

A new one would set me back around 900 EUR (possibly including fitting, I can't remember), but since I bought the car for only 800 EUR, I'm not ready to go down that route, but also I don't want to give her up yet!

Any tips on how to go about this? I've pretty much exhausted all the local (Athlone area) car dismantlers, and the mechanic I use hasn't had any luck either.

Welcome to the world of the W140! These are bonded in so secondhand ones are rare as they usually break on removal. Other than trying the windscreen people, I think you are stuck with MB.

The windscreen people don't have any issue removing bonded screens from most modern cars without breaking. Is there something more difficult about the w140?
Edit - probably double glazed. That might make it tricky

Looks like I'm stuck with either forging out the 900 bucks to get a new windscreen or scrapping her, which would be a shame, because she is running fine otherwise and there are no major faults.

Apparently the previous owner managed to get something wedged between the boot lid and rear windscreen and tried to close the lid... :/

Is pretty disgusting that such a car can be scrapped over a damaged screen

Have you tried Pilkington in the UK?

If they have the moulds they will make one off screens to order for a lot less than 900. I've bought two in the past and have another on order.

How did you go about this, did you just send them an email? Have you a specific contact which I should use? It looks like they're just dealing with businesses or are they taking orders from individuals too?

BTW thanks for all the recommendations so far!

Send them an email with your requirements and they will get back to you with a price. They will take individual orders.

Just to give an update on this, Pilkington do not seem to deal with the general public directly, that's what I was told in an email I got. They have referred me to an Irish supplier. Will see what quote they come back with.

Ring Eric Norton in Longford. He usually has a good number of older Mercs for breaking. 087 6851825
No connection with him except as a satisfied customer.

Dont laugh but your local branch of Mr Windscreen might be worth a try. Their Sandyford branch got me screens for a mk2 GTI, VW van and a mk1 Escort in the last couple of years and for a lot less than uk suppliers.

I have ordered in the past and I've placed an order for two more screens today.
The cars are from the 70's and 80's and I have them delivered to a U.K. address which may or may not make a difference.
