Friend of mine had a degree in Engineering and added this on.

Hes now a Software Engineer for a major company despite having 0 interest in Software about 2 years ago.

I would say programming wise it goes to nearly 3rd year in any 4 year course. You dont get the wider programming education that you would get from the full 4 years but they get straight to the point and hit the ground running.
