From various rumblings in the media, he's off at the end of the season. Would like him to stay though, very good player.

I hope you're wrong - he has been developing very nicel IMO.

McCloskey and Henshaw in the Irish midfield.

I don't see Te'o getting any Ireland caps. He brings nothing that currently qualified players can't bring.

We have tons of options at centre, in a year or twos time you wouldn't even have to look outside of Ulster for a quality pairing never mind the other three provinces.

Henshaw and Payne will be in the Leinster midfield so probably worth keeping them there for Ireland...

So I see we can pick up our lovely supporters' packs on Saturday in the RDS. No mention of alternative pick up opportunities, but I presume they will make the packs available some other time for those of us who can't make it on Saturday.

It was the first couple of home games last year.

Thinking of taking herself to a friday night game in the RDS this year. Are tickets handy enough got in advance?

I am hoping it will be the same this year - I know several people who can't make it on Saturday.

But unless Ulster mix and match their centre pairing like crazy, we probably will have to look outside ulster, because players at other provinces will be playing week in week out whereas that's not really possible for all of Ulster's half a dozen. And if ulster have sense/any desire to have some level of continuity, they won't have a revolving door at centre, so the same 2/3 players will be the ones in ireland contention. With all the centres up there now there's only 2 who are realistic candidates for the World Cup squad.

Te'o has potential to be a good player, but he's not even close to international standard yet. Id be looking at Aki before him

It's getting close to the stage where I'd happily punt Payne down the M1 if this nonsense of playing him at 13 persists. :)

We have much better options for 13 and sure if we can't play him in his actual position then what's the point in having him about.

The first Friday home game isn't until the 23rd October against Glasgow.

Loads of tickets on ticketmaster for it now.

Not much of a vote of confidence in Leinster's prospects when ye want 2 excellent fullbacks for your midfield. I thought Ringrose was the next coming of BOD?

He's a totally different player to Payne, I don't think there is any 13 in Ireland who is similar to Te'o so he would certainly bring something different. Whether it would be better is a different question.

But I don't see him wanting to play for Ireland really, he's never even mentioned it afaik.

Of course he is. One is a full back and the other is a centre.

They're both centers. You just prefer one of them in a different position.

Perhaps he feels he should attempt to play for his own country. I think it would be a real pity if Rugby goes down the road of allowing national teams to become made up of a myriad of nationalities.

You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear. He's as much of a 13 as Jonny Sexton is a 12.

You think Te'o has the makings of a full back? Ambitious!

TBH I agree re Payne being better at 15 but that ship has sailed by the looks of things.

He brings a level of physically that only henshaw naturally possess IMO, he's a natural athlete. He's a raw talent with Pacific blood, when he's fully clued in at 13 or 12 and the finer points of the game I would imagine he'd be right in there in the mix.

The way the game is going I imagine in 3 years time the only guys physical enough to play centre for Ireland will be henshaw, Payne, mccloskey and t'eo.

Really? Would you welcome that? Wouldn't it be better if we kept the Irish team Irish as much as possible?
I can very reluctantly understand us bringing in one or two specialists in positions where we are usually limited (tight head, second row) - but I am very surprised at supporters hoping another foreigner will win a place on the Ireland team.

If he wants to commit to Ireland and nobody else then I'm all for it. That takes a lot of commitment - moving home, leaving your family, risking a career etc

And if other teams allow it we'd do best not to take some moral high ground.

Well I, for one, would be outraged if some foreigner came in and took Jared Payne's jersey.

I would have gone for Nevin spence. Not forgotten.

Well we'll have to agree to disagree, you'll also have to agree to disagree with a bunch of his previous and current coaches as well.

Rugby has had quite a history down through the years of national teams having "foreigners" playing for them.

Yea this is am area where Joe is just wrong. Compare his performances at 15 and 13 and there's no way you can come to any conclusions other than the guy is a full back.

He's not even the best 13 at Ulster never mind the best 13 in Ireland.

well, not really - if that's where you happen to be working at the time!

You think Te'o has the makings of a full back? Ambitious!

TBH I agree re Payne being better at 15 but that ship has sailed by the looks of things.

To continue the nautical theme, when Payne was moved back to 15 last season for Ulster, he looked all at sea. Well, perhaps that's a stretch but he certainly didn't look anything like the player that played there the season before.

He needs to be playing there regularly to have maximum impact, I reckon, which he won't be.

It's going to be pretty interesting to see how Ulster line up in the backs this season. Again, we're looking at a situation where people are going to be kicking their heels and possibly looking to move.

5 spots between Gilroy, Bowe, Trimble, Olding, Ludik, Scholes, Payne, Cave, McCloskey and Marshall doesn't go.

If Kiss/Doak go with 11-15 of Trimble, Cave, Payne, Bowe and Ludik with Gilroy at 23 that means Marshall, Scholes, Olding and McCloskey don't even make the match day squad.

I assume Ludik won't be retained next season but a higher calibre player in Piutau is arriving which won't make the waters any less muddy.

Interestingly, Marshall's contract is up at the end of this season. He's a guy I could see as potentially being the fall guy at the moment and maybe considering a fresh start in his career after the last two years of interruptions. Olding and Gilroy both finish their existing contract this season also but don't see them going anywhere at this point.

It'd be nice if some of that talent was redistributed through to the other provinces, but if Marshall was to go for example, is it just me or does it seem more likely he'd end up in the Premiership than remaining in Ireland?

I reckon he'd up sticks and head to England or France, alright. At this point, he wouldn't command a huge salary in one of the other provinces and he's well down the pecking order for national selection. Munster would be interested in him, I'm sure, particularly with Hurley turning 32 next summer and JJH gone. But I'm not sure how much interest Marshall would have in the southern provinces relative to other opportunities.

Chris Farrell had offers from other provinces when he chose Grenoble. I could see Marshall doing similar. Of course, he may decide to stay put but I really can't see him being first choice for Ulster. His two CC appearances last season only came when the back line was decimated by injury (not making the 23 for any of the other games).
