Easy way to sort and rename photos?

I’ve been digging through several directories of photos – mostly camera phone photos – (My SLR Photos are better organised) and trying to sort them a bit better. I really feel normal windows is not great at this. I’m wondering is there a better way to sort and rename them? For example, with my camera phone photos, for many I would like to rename them to what the photo is of – in case I need to find it again. I may also want to rename groups of them if I was in a particular place or at an event etc. I’d really like a simple way of renaming, such as an ‘F’ shortcut then type – and hit enter. (I know F2 works in explorer but not in image preview)

Can anyone recommend a better way to do this?

If you change the folder to view large thumbnails, you can see the previews as you rename. F2 on a batch of images will rename all of them with a sequence number in brackets.

You're probably going at this the wrong way, dont name the files, use a photo archiving application that can correctly tag stuff and allow you to filter based on that data later.

I use a program called advancedrenamer.

It uses the exif data of the images, takes a little setting up to start with but allows you to create proper file names, im still not happy with the whole process though.

I put the images initially in a folder called inbox, then use it to copy the images to

V:\Multimedia\Photos\Negatives\<Img Year>\<Img Month>\<Img Day>

with the filename
<Img Year>_<Img Month>_<Img Day>-<Img Hour>-<Img Min>-<Img Sec>-<Img Subsec>

So you end up with nested Years months and days folders for backup

I then move the same files from the inbox into

V:\Multimedia\Photos\WIP\<Img Year>\<Img Month>\<Img Day>

Once set up both these involve one click.

These are the ones that i work with, but always keep the unique name. I do something similar with raw files except i move them first, then create the jpegs.

At this point you can get all images for a month or year in one window by just searching for a dot (.)

What i then do, and am not fully happy with.....

(i then put them through windows photo gallery / picasa, dont like either program really, just not sure of anything better, to enter event tags (christmas or holiday 2015) , peoples face tags, location tags which can then be written into the filenames using exif data with advanced renamer again)

My files end up in windows explorer in a

V:\Multimedia\Photos\Gallery\<Img Year>\<Img Month>\<Img Day>

With the filename

2015_04_07-14-56-23-15 - Me, Friend in picture, Other Friend - 1st Tag for event, 2nd tag - Tag for location - TakenByPaul (based on the camera model in the exif data)

To give to family and friends is a dream, i can just scrub all the exif data before i give it out so they just get the file names.

I dont know, a nice relaxing day after a long weekend, i rambled.

or as ED E said use tags instead. I would worry if you switched apps, or used a different app to view them, do they all read/write tags the same. MP3 apps don't thats for sure.

I simply drop my mine in a folder "2015 04 10 Beauf Birthday" etc changing the description to suit. Have a parent folder for each year. 2015 etc. Dates are in reverse order as they sort properly then.
