Driving in England - nice places to stop for a break, have lunch, etc?

We're heading to England at the end of the month, and going to be driving from Holyhead to York, then to Manchester a couple of days later, and then back to the ferry.

We'll be on the motorways for much of the way, so there will be no problem getting fed and watered in the usual Burger King/Costa Coffee service stations.

However does anyone know of any site or app that tells you of nice pubs, tea rooms, etc. near to the motorways in England and Wales, so that we can make things slightly more interesting?

Why take the motorway if you're not in a hurry? The old road from Holyhead passes through some nice places.

When driving from York to Manchester you could be driving through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world if you take a minor detour... From York, take the M1 towards Barnsley then come off and head in the direction of Silkstone and Penistone... Carry on along the A628 in the direction of Tintwistle and on then to Manchester.

as someone who drives a fair bit with work, all those motorway service stations are horrendous places, awful, crap fast food food and a total rip off, if you head to any town just off them you will find nice places

Good advice. Leave the motorway and see the true English towns/villages. Lovely little cafes, bakeries and English pubs that do great pub grub.
