Provincial minor championships are very convoluted and I don't know how teams put up with them tbh. The winner of tonight's Cork-Limerick game will very likely have to play the loser again in their very next match. The Leinster Championship is all over the place too.

No odds available online at the moment for outrights. Nothing about the fixtures for All-Ireland quarter-finals either, but I presume this year that Galway face the Leinster runners-up and the Munster runners-up play the Ulster champions, the reverse of last year.

It all starts tonight with the Munster first round games, Tipperary are overwhelming favourites against Waterford, while Cork are favourites over Limerick. Based on that alone and from the talk around the place, Tipperary and Cork are the favourites for Munster... Limerick still have a decent team but not as impressive as the last two years. Waterford have been impressive years too.

No one is ever going to write off Kilkenny especially after they won it last year but I have no idea how good the other Leinster teams are likely to be. Galway always tend to be strong at minor level too.

Limerick have six players who started last year's All-Ireland final in the team, the captain Eoin McNamara is on his third year on the panel and has been a starter for Doon's senior team ahead of Darragh Stapleton who was last year's U-21 goalkeeper. The entire half-back line started in the final, although O'Loughlin was at full-back and Grimes in midfield then. O'Loughlin is probably better out the field but he was filling a gap last year and coped admirably. Seamus Flanagan & Peter Casey also started and were two of our best players last year, and Barry Murphy of Doon also came on. Flanagan is a class act, plays at full-forward for Feoghanagh/Castlemahon and is their best player but his work rate and ability to create scores out the field were what made him invaluable last year. It will be interesting to see if he does line out on the edge of the square. Casey is a forward in the Graeme Mulcahy- small, but very skilful and well able to hold his own. Kyle Hayes is an outstanding talent too, could play him in a number of positions, but has been played in the half-forwards recently.

Don't know a huge amount about the Cork team, perhaps someone else can shed light on them. All I know is that Shane Kingston is a class act and ran riot against us last year. Big test for our half-back line to keep an eye on him.

Don't have information for the subs or extended panelp for these two teams, and I'm not sure who the Waterford captain is either.

Don't know a huge amount about these teams in general, I'm sure Tipp/Waterford supporters could fill us in. I remember Stephen Quirke was one of Tipp's better players against us last year, they were pretty poor in general. Darragh Peters & Alan Tynan played that well too, think Tynan got a few scores. Have heard great things about Shane Neville at midfield, think he was on the panel this time last year too, supposed to be an excellent prospect. I'm guessing that Brian McGrath is a relation of Noel & John?

As for Waterford, few familiar names there. I'm pretty sure Prunty & Darragh Lyons played in the Munster final last year, and Andy Molumby was a thorn in our side too. Eddie Meaney scored a few against us aswell. Waterford have been pretty good at this level over the past few years, wouldn't write them off.

Cork-Limerick game does not appear to be on local radio of either county :( 95fm are generally good for that but Liam Aherne is covering Andy Lee's fight in New York this week.

We're winning anyway, 0-3 to 0-1 so far. Tipp beating Waterford by a point too.

Excellent start for Limerick down in Páirc Uí Rinn, went 0-4 to 0-1 up and Seamus Flanagan then got a goal. He's got 1-2 already with Peter Casey and Barry Murphy getting the other points.

Billy Dunne and a free for Shane Kingston for Cork.

    1-4 to 0-2.

Tipp-Waterford is all level at a 2 apiece.

Just past the halfway mark in both games, Limerick lead Cork by 5 down in Cork: 1-6 to 0-4.

Waterford beating Tipp in Thurles, 0-4 to 0-3.

About 5 mins to go to the break: Limerick leading Cork 1-9 to 0-5. Waterford beating Tipp 0-8 to 0-5.

whether it's Cork's improvement or Limerick falling apart, 3 points in the 2nd half is poor. second change will help though

Massive win for them today anyway in their quarter-final; beat Wicklow by 30 points. Wexford beat Laois by 2, Meath beat Kildare by 4 goals.

Laois impressive v Cork in a challenge a few weeks back apparently. The legendary Pat Critchley doing great work with them by all accounts. Reportedly had a few very impressive forwards. Looks like the concession of 2 goals caught them today having been well up at h/t. Presume they have a back door. Will be interested to see if they progress.
Agree with you, Westmeat showing great form!.

    Offaly beat Carlow too.

It means Carlow play Westmeath, and Laois play Meath in the play-off.

    Westmeath still on track!!

Offaly beaten by Dublin in Parnell Park on Saturday and Wexford lost by a point v KKs after extra time. Q/final pairings as follows: Laois v Offaly and Wexford v Westmeath.

Dublin & Kilkenny already in semi finals.

Yeah, open draw after the QF's. Fancy Laois and Wexford to come through and finish the SF line-up.

Just out curiosity, was talking to lad in work from Carlow and he reckons there should be shield competitions at minor level in hurling and football, just to give more counties a shot at silverware or playing on the big day in Leinster in Cork Park.

He reckons in the hurling the two losing qualifiers take on the losing quarter finalists, with the winners of them games taking on the losers take of the two semi's, with the winners of them games playing a shield final before the Leinster Minor Final.

Good idea from the chap in fairness, just wondering what others think?

Limerick played Clare and Tipperary recently

Hammered Clare - whom I'm led to believe are poor

and beat Tipp by 4 or 5 so seem to be getting campaign going in right direction again

Losers group game wed week in Thurles v Waterford

Tipp team I don't think was full strength and was a lot of fringe players

Was at the Carlow v Westmeath game on Saturday. Not that impressed by Westmeath at all. This isn't by any means a good Carlow minor side and just after ht were 1-11 to 1-4 ahead. Was a great comeback by Westmeath, and Carlow did fall apart. The move to midfield of one of the forwards I think, changed the game. He took over, but Westmeath would have to massively improve to trouble Wexford

Absolutely agree. The format would need a bit of thought but for the Carlow/Kerry/Westmeaths of the hurling world it would be something tangible to strive for.

Waterford pushed hard ( albeit an under performing Tipp team ) and were very very unlucky to beaten

Limerick will bounce back from Cork performance and with a few positional changes and if Mackey back from injury will be an improved team

Hard one to call but I wouldn't be writing Waterford off - they'll go to the final whistle

The teams who met in the Munster final of the last two years meet in the play-off this year. Limerick have brought in Conor Houlihan, Willie O'Meara and Brian Ryan into the team for this game with Michael Bourke, Colum Carroll and Ciaran O'Connor dropping to the bench. Houlihan & Ryan were both missing through injury the last day, while O'Meara impressed from the bench... Mickey Mackey is also back on the bench after injury, with Adam O'Brien and Darren Golden also coming into contention.

Bit surprised that Kyle Dillon and Cian Magner Flynn have dropped out completely, I thought that Kyle Dillon would start tbh. Limerick had a very good first half against Cork but fell away completely in the second, and were beaten comprehensively in the end. Let's hope the changes can make a difference.

Waterford, on the other hand, make no personnel changes but Calum & Darragh Lyons have switched positions as have Glenn Waters and Peter Hogan. Don't really know how they'll line out but it sounds like they were the better team against a fancied Tipperary but just couldn't close it out. Whoever wins this will face Cork in the semi-final. I don't have information for Waterford's subs and extended panel.

Bit of a pain that it's on in Thurles, but I suppose I have an exam the next morning so at least I won't be overly distracted... :o

Magner Flynn badly injured ankle in training last Friday apparently. Undergoing cryotherapy to aid recovery.

Didn't know that. Awful shame. :(

It would be very disappointing to crash out after two games, have some real talent in the team, let's hope for a win tonight.

Early goal chance for Waterford, blocked by the Limerick back but Andy Molumby scores a point from the resulting clearance.

Willie O'Meara levels things up after a mistake from the Waterford back.

Brilliant save from the Waterford goalkeeper to deny Barry Murphy!

Referee was playing the advantage, and pulled it back for a free, and Seamus Flanagan went for goal and missed, easily saved. Apparently took no run-up, not sure why he didn't tap it over.

We've hit 3 wides including a free, and Waterford are winning 0-3 to 0-1 after 10-ish minutes with Glenn Waters and Peter Hogan also scoring.

Conditions are poor, we've just brought Eoghan McNamara up from goal to take a '65. He scored it.

0-5 to 0-3 now; Jack Prendergast and Molumby again have scored the most recent points for Waterford, Willie O'Meara and Eoghan Mac for Limerick.

Goal for Waterford! Aaron O'Sullivan after MacNamara saved the initial shot.

Waterford completely dominating the aerial battle and winning all the breaking ball. Limerick seem to be off the pace bar maybe some of the backs. The last 5 LK puckouts have been won by Waterford.

5 to the break. Limerick in real trouble here, Waterford dominant.

Jack Prendergast and Peter Casey exchanged frees, before Waterford scored again, but Casey just got one from play too.

Kyle Hayes just had a goal chance saved by Billy Nolan, who seems to be in great form. Another Peter Casey free, and Waterford have started to hit a few wides.

    1-7 to 0-6.

    Half-Time: Waterford 1-7 Limerick 0-7

Limerick got the last 3 scores of the half, last one a great score from Barry Murphy. Really upped the pace and intensity, it seemed, the likes of Seamus Flanagan, Barry Murphy and Kyle Hayes started getting involved after they had been very very quiet up until then. Waterford had been winning everything up until then and possibly should have been more than 6 ahead.

Darragh Carroll seems to be making an impact, as does Willie O'Meara and Peter Casey the most lively of the forwards but the trio mentioned above really need to stay involved and Brian Ryan too. In the backs, Conor Byrnes seemed to hurl an awful lot of ball, as did Conor McSweeney. Paddy O'Loughlin, Jack O'Grady and Conor Houlihan also seemed to be doing well.

Puck-outs a worry, their keeper seems to be having a stormer too. Molumby, Hogan, two Lyons' and O'Sullivan seem to be very prominent for Waterford. Hopefully we can come back in the 2nd half.

2nd point for goalkeeper Eoghan MacNamara, 2 points in it!

Billy Nolan has made another save, Seamus Flanagan won the ball, drove at goal and had it saved. Eoghan MacNamara converts the '65, his third of the game, think he's our top scorer.

Level! Flanagan from play! Come on Limerick!!!

Another '65 converted by Eoghan Mac, we're in the lead; his 4th point.

Jake Beecher is on for Darragh McGrath, think Seamus Flanagan is starting to cause them big problems.

Limerick have scored 7 scores on the trot.

Mickey Mackey on for Peter Casey as a blood replacement.

Peter Casey point! Limerick seem to be totally dominant now, Waterford need a score.
