Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Galway can feel very hard done by. That late Kilkenny free to draw level was a clear dive. Galway player had defended it perfectly and Kilkenny lad just threw himself to the ground.

Where do the GAA get these refs from?

That fella today was hopeless from start to finish. Missing clear fouls, giving frees for nothing and patently playing for a draw in both normal and extra time. Disgraceful.

    Terrible decision by the ref.
Galway player got his hand in a stupid position alright but his two arms stayed stationary as the KK player threw this weight up and down.
You cant drag someone down with your arm on top, you'd have to use your body weight from there which he obviously didn't.

The ref gave a square ball against Galway as well earlier in the game, from open play and the player barely entered before the ball, a good 5 seconds after the puck.

barely entered before the ball, a good 5 seconds after the puck.

So it was a square ball then. Fair result. Taught kilkenny were the better side but Galway got the goals.

While Galway were hard done by with the last free in extra time I thought overall the ref was poor for both sides. Galway got some soft frees themselves throughout the game.

Remember also that Galway's equalising point in normal time was scored a full minute after injury time was up.

Overall though it was a very entertaining game and fair play to both teams.

My understanding is that you can now enter after the ball is hit in from open play and before it arrives in the square.

There were 2 substitutions made in injury time by Kilkenny. Hence the added time.

Ah fair enough then. I often give out when the ref doesn't add on time for substitutions so credit where credit is due.

Did anyone catch the Kk v Galway game? Thought #20 was in the square? Think Galway kinda robbed it tbh, thou goals win games.

The most blatant square ball you'd ever see. Cost KK a place in the All Ireland. Ref and his umpire should be held accountable for that

You're right, it should had been disallowed. For third time in two weeks, the KK minors failed to close out a game they should have won.

As clear a square ball as you're ever likely to see. Tough on Kilkenny but credit to Galway for sticking at it.

Forgive my ignorance but has the square ball rule changed?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

    Not for hurling.

I said it here last week about the standard of officiating ruining these games.

Hard to stomach having to watch the most blatant square ball ever, and a 70-something umpire stood looking at it 3 yards away.

    Disgraceful stuff.

That said, if Kilkenny were any use they'd have had Galway beaten a long time before that. Two poor teams, but a very good game to watch.

My gaelige isn't great but I think the analysts just said it's okay as long it's while the ball is in the air. I didn't know it had changed, but watching here with my dad and he said it had

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,151 ✭✭✭letowski

Yeah it didnt change 3 years ago like football, player cannot be in the square before ball arrives. It was a poor call by the ref and umpires. I think the rule is a joke anyway, it can be impossible to tell sometimes when the ball or player arrives first into the square (though not with today).

Analyst from Galway I think so he's not too bothered I'd say!

looking at the stats after the game Kilkenny were well on top just didn't see it out, like the drawn game

No the "old" rule still applies in hurling. The attacker can't be in the square before the ball enters the square.

That rule still applies from frees, 45s and sideline kicks in football. The attacker can enter the square in football before the ball arrives in open play but not before the ball has been kicked or handpassed.

Cathal Moore is having a laugh if he isn't sure that it wasn't a square ball.

That probably says it all!. 140min of hurling and Kilkenny could'nt raise a green flag, so unlike Kilkenny. Kilkenny inside forwards so poor!

And never really looked like getting one. Except for maybe a half chance for Gaffney near the end today. It's a tough defeat for Kilkenny to take but as long as our games are reffed by humans you have to accept mistakes will be made and just get on with it

35 scores beats 43. KK did more hurling but weren't clinical enough to close it either day.

Great win for Galway. They looked beaten about 3 or 4 times over the course of the two games but showed a serious amount of heart and character to keep coming back. Don't think much was expected of them this year. Weren't even expected to get past Limerick in the first game. Most of the team are underage again next year so I think most thought they would have a better chance in 2016.

Dublin player about to score. Referee blows up as Tipp player injured and gives indirect free to Dublin which Tipp win break and score at other end. Absolute joke of decision.

Yeah they have a top freetaker. I think the Dub half forward line is giving the highly Tipp half back line a good contest. Dublin's 14 is causing trouble too. Tipps inside line is good though, I think Tipp ahould still win.

This ref will make the difference for tipp, unfotunately

I didn't realise there was a minor thread, I've been commenting in the senior one so I'll just quote the messages I put there and then delete the originals.

Another great minor match. Fair play to both Dublin and Tipperary who both gave very good accounts of themselves, Dublin have nothing to be ashamed of after that match. I felt Tipp edged it throughout and thought they'd come through in the end even when they went behind, now lets hope the senior is as good as these two minor games.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,806 ✭✭✭corny

Dublin dropping a man back to stop the Tipp inside forwards doing damage contributed massively to them losing. Firstly, it didn't work and secondly, backs clearing the ball only found Tipp defenders which completely handed them the initiative.

I see there a Jack Grealish playing midfield for Galway minors. Hardly the same lad playing for Villa :D

Found this decision very interesting today. Have never seen it before where the scoring opportunity was in front of goal when the ref stopped play. Obviously the ref has to take account of the welfare of the injured player and its hard for them to know how vital that split second may be for a player's welfare but it was very harsh for Dublin that they paid the price for what was nothing to do with them.

No consistency. In senior game for Seamus Callinan 1st Goal Aidan Harte down with head injury no stoppage

fairly even game so far. looks like Tipp could get a goal or two yet. Galway lad lucky not to see red for pulling off a helmet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,264 ✭✭✭✭Fireball07

Goals for Galway look to have swung it their way, goalie could have done better for the 2nd anyway.

Galway deserving winners, never left Tipp into it in the 2nd half

He had a very good game, but I though the corner back Bannon should have got man of the match, he cleared some amount of ball.

Good hurling match, sicily deserved by Galway though Tipp made a contribution too. Hopefully its the only thing Galway will be celebrating today!

Bannon was excellent, Tipp never came to grips with the sweeper at all and like all agae groups in Tipp our forwards didnt work hard enough when they didnt have possession and when they did, they simply dont actually know how to tackle legally.
