if there wasnt a sunroof I'd have thought ex-garda ( although I think all theres were saloons )

These were a cracking car to drive, way ahead of comparable family saloons of the time.

I’ve heard (but have no experience myself) that manual Mercs of this vintage are not very good
I have some experience driving a good few manual and automatic Mecedes-Benz of that era, so can comment on this.

Advantages of the M-B automatic over their manual transmissions from that time:
    - Smooth operation in town and low speed driving,
    - General comfort (in low speeds), no need to shift gears. Put it on D(rive) and rest your left foot and have both hands available for other driving tasks :).

And pros of M-B manual transmissions:
    - Simpler and lighter construction,
    - Easier to service,
    - Very robust and generally reliable,
    - More gears,
    - Better gear ratios overall,
    - Higher efficiency and less power loss,
    - About 25 % better fuel economy,
    - Slightly more comfortable on motorways (less noise from lower revving engine),
    - Higher top speed (that shouldn't matter on our roads).

There are people that would not want to trade the comfort for efficiency or more gear ratios and they will always prefer an automatic. They are almost as durable as manual transmissions, but have a little higher service requirements.

Afaik it was a few more years till the guards started using hatchbacks, but the above would make a great film prop if it was done up correctly!

I have 4 and 5 speed auto W124's and I also have a 5 speed manual 250 diesel estate amongst the other Mercedes' of that era that reside in my shed. I bought my first w124 - a manual - 30 years ago. Generally what you say is spot on about the MB transmissions but you left out one thing, the most important thing, people who say that the 717:411 manual transmission is terrible need to learn how to drive a car!

Rare one! Especially interesting IMO as my father once had this exact colour, spec & model. It was a brilliant car at the time, but sadly it was written off in a crash years back. Some of the crash photos may be around the house; I'll post them up later if I can find them!

That's on my DD watch list but I think the money is a bit strong.
I had a red 96 saloon. Fabulous car.

Yeah, there were 5-speed automatic transmissions available, but only for the latest 6-cylinder petrol engined cars and it was an option. Probably the least reliable of all transmissions in the 124-series.
I also forgot that there were 4-speed manual gearboxes in some base models, but they are very rare in this country.

Why has this car not sold apart from the fact that the seller can't write without a full stop!
    It's a manual.
    And maybe because it's white.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

White doesn't help either. Tell me about it :D

Oops - I forgot that was close to home! :pac:

The 200 does look a bit like an enormous fridge in white.
    The 190, much less so.

Why so? Is there a price typo or something?

Interesting car, for the right buyer.
Though I question the decision to take an interior shot in (I assume) shorts.

It was listed at €10,000 earlier, it's €1,234 now, aka POA... Don't know which is worse !

Was looking at one of these the other day in France being used as a daily driver. Huge beast of a machine, the original 7 seater :)

I don't know about that. My dad had a Peugeot 404 7 seater estate, and that was from the 60s.

    FYP :)

I've always had a secret admiration for these French "familiale" cars. The DS was my favourite. There's more of these in the Netherlands now than there are in France

Yeah I remember the Peugeots too. 404 and 505, saw plenty of those on holidays in France in the 70s and 80s

Those old BL barges went nicer when they has a straight 6. (When they worked)

Sure the Citroen Safari predates that too. 1958.

    Handy.

You could drive it now, then your family could take you to your funeral in it.

E500 Porsche built w124 no price and I'm guessing it's not a bargain but that's a nice classic.

Just watched the video of it on donedeal... looks mint to be fair.
